This is so annoying when it happens - no, I don't want to make small talk with anyone while perfoming a task I could do on my own (walking up to a room) and pay for the privilege!

Like some others, I don't mind the offer. But I do draw the line at snatching bags out of peoples' hands, as I have experienced in some places. There are some places where the service culture has gone overboard and the staff become pests.

I like to be asked, but generally decline unless I've overpacked my carryon and I've been lugging it for tooooo long.

I've seen so many folks on FT call it a "rollerboard" that I began to wonder myself, but "roll aboard" makes more sense to me - as in, you can roll it aboard the plane.
Unless rollerboarding is some new sport I'm unaware of?
(roller skates/blades + skateboards = rollerboarding?)

Rollaboard is a trademark of TravelPro, it's not supposed to be used as a generic word for wheeled carry-on bags.

Rollerboard is a mispelling of Rollaboard.

How it should work:

Lots of bags, big bags: Bellman meets you at the curb and assists.

Small rolling bag: Bellman helps with bag you initiate contact. Otherwise, after checking you in, the front-desk person asks, "Would you like assistance with your bag?" If yes, the Bellman is signaled. If no, no Bellman and no hard feelings.

Um, with due apologies to TravelPro, a company I never heard of, and its lawyers, it's a rollaboard. You guys never advertised the trademark enough to imbue the term with secondary meaning, and "rollaboard" is now a generic term for all time, like aspirin, shredded wheat, xeroxing, and googling.

You certainly can call any wheeled suitcase a rollaboard in your casual conversations, but Samsonite (for example) cannot call their suitcases Rollaboards because the name is indeed trademarked by TravelPro.

Which could well be something that TravelPro desires.

I'm sure they do it mainly for tips, but in a way it is a nice gesture, so no big deal. But when we checked into the SAS in Berlin, the bellman was really sort of over the top when he was in our room explaining every detail of everything to us like we had never seen a window before or didn't know how to open curtains. He was a nice fellow, but he was very enthusiastic.

I agree. That is one of the things that make me realize (and appreciate) that I am out of the traveling chaos, and can unwind and let someone take care of me for a few moments. Well worth a $1 or $2 ( less than 1/2 the cost of a bottle of water!)

Well, aspirin and shredded wheat are not trademarkes, while Xerox and Google both are. And google is not a generic term, at least to me, because when I google something, I use google. Xerox may be because I xerox (or "copy" as I say) on a Canon or similar. Other trademarks now commonly used in daily speech are Kleenex, Sea-do, there are others but I can't think of them.
