I am kind of disappointed that Burbank has dropped one of the CMH round trip flights. Now instead of flying RT for 150, its 250 plus Taxes. Still Non Stop from California, but now higher then the Legacy carriers. So what is more important, Miles + Price VS Time(Direct Flight). We need a skybus forum to find out ahead of time when they will release the new schedules for the 10 dollar fares. I heard Nationwide workers get a heads up on this, since much of their ad revenue comes from them.
Still overall a great experience as I just flew to CMH for the holidays for 40.00 RT. |
Skybus cancels at least 10 flights over the last few days:
http://www.columbusdispatch.com/live...26/skybus.html After some 250 travelers were stranded Christmas Day, discount airline Skybus has canceled more flights out of Columbus, where the company is based. Flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Bellingham, Washington, were scrubbed Wednesday morning. The problems started Christmas morning when one of the planes that flies to multiple cities each day was found to have a mechanical problem. That touched off a chain of cancellations, and also sent travelers scrambling for alternatives. Flights to Chattanooga, Tenn.; Burbank, Calif.; and Biloxi, Miss., were among those canceled. The Columbus-based discount airline made its first flight in May. It said last week that it lost 16 million dollars from July through September....snip |

And of course the Skybus solution is to refund your $10 fare and tell you that you can find a flight on another airline, but they won't help you. Add that to the losses last quarter, a bit more winter weather, and I don't see anything positive happening for this airline. |
Im thinking of taking one of Skybus' inaugural flights from GSO to either Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers or St. Augustine/Daytona Beach/Jacksonville.
Does anyone know if you can simply get off and then reboard without clearing security or do they escort all pax to "arrival zones" that are automatically landside. Since Ill be doing a quick turn for $40, I dont want to get stuck during the short 30 min. groundtime. Thanks! |

I'm in Columbus right now, so I saw news coverage of this story on TV. Skybus is an airline that has 7 aircraft total, 2 of which were offline on 12/25 due to mech problems. That's what led to these cancellations. I don't imagine there are any airlines that wouldn't have to cancel flights when 28% of their fleet was grounded. |

Most of the flying public is clueless about the logistics of running an airline, therefore, they don't understand the risks with Skybus. If even one a/c is knocked off line due to mechnical or weather, paxs are s...d. And the airline has no other means to get paxs to their destination in a timely manner nor the resources to help paxs rebook. What is going to happen when winter storms hit Columbus and the airport shuts down or operations grind to a near halt.

Yes, that's true... but most other airlines would help reaccomadate the passenger on another airline instead of saying "tough, here's your $10 back". Like they say... you get what you pay for. I just don't see people continuing to pay for it that much longer.
In fact, in the early days of some of those carriers the charters always took priority over scheduled service. So if the airline needed your plane for a charter - "Sorry, you're out of luck. Here's your money back." Yet Allegiant, etc. managed to survive.

Can you print your boarding pass for the return at check-in for the original flight? Ill be doing the quick turn at either St. Augustine or Punta Gorda, both of which are small operations with hopefully an easy turnaround for me! Thanks for your SixAlpha!

As long as it's less than 24 hours til flight time. I confirmed my return flight from my hotel, then printed out the boarding pass at the airport kiosk. There are kiosks at the gate, too, for people who have lost their passes. Not that it was necessary for a good seat. I had a row to myself on all my legs BLI-CMH-PSM return. Me thinks that Skybus is not long for this world.:td: |

I think the race to the bottom idea for service misses the mark. What we are seeing worldwide is service differentiation, and that's a wonderful thing for everyone. On the high end, we see 100% business class airlines and frequent upgrades to the premium and even coach cabins for some carriers. Skybus, Ryanair and the like go for the low end. There is a market for a variety of approaches.

When they founded jetBlue, they said Neeleman was out of his mind. When they founded Virgin America, I'm sure it had its share of doubters too. Every company that started on a completely new business model-Apple, jetBlue, Virgin America, on and on and on, the naysayers were all quite vocal. Give it time. We'll see.

Should Skybus succeed, it'll be basically Skybus vs. Southwest. jetBlue already has its niche market, Virgin America's got it's niche market, and the legacies aren't going to touch Skybus's approach with a 10-foot pole.
