My husband is finally impressed with the FT compendium of knowledge. Great post!

I am in Ohio, it's cold and I have the heat on in the hotel room. I can already feel my skin drying out. I don't sleep with the heat on so I do like these newer Hampton Inn duvet covers/bedding, they seem warmer and cleaner than the older bedspread type bed coverings.

Cold I don't mind. But the heat and dryness are just awful. Of course, the best is a window that opens, accompanied by earplugs if necessary. Second, a two-room suite sort of place, so that the heat/cold can be on in the outer room and off in the sleeping part. Third, and not very good at all, the glass of water near the bed, no covers and dream about home. Finally, ambien!

What I cannot stand is the constant on/off of the condenser(?). It is always sudden and sometimes so loud that I spring out of bed because of the noise. Its very disruptive.
My main problem is that I like it cold and many hotel A/C untis the thermostat opens up on the warm side of my comfort point.

One trick is to pull the front cover off and pull out the thermocouple. I wrap a towel around it and that seems to be good for a couple of extra degrees.

A harder fix is to simply jumper across the thermostat contacts. That always works bit then of course you have an always on condition, which is often just right for me.

After sleeping in my QUIET bedroom for the past few years, I've become a very light sleeper. Therefore, when I'm in a hotel room and the AC/heating unit goes on during the night, I wake up and results in a bad night's sleep. So what I do now is I take control of the situation by noting the situation such as the amount of air bathroom vents out, does it have temperature control or just low/med/hi, extra blankets, etc. After getting the facts straight, I change the temperature of the room to the extremes, cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and turn it off when I get in bed. That way the temperature will be reasonable during the sleep time.
I try to stay off the top floor since the heat/cold seem to come through the ceiling and make the above adjustment that much more difficult.
