OK, I've pulled the October 2006 issue of Travel and Leisure out of my magazine rack. They calculated the estimated retail cost of the kits. For kits that included sample sizes not available for purchase, prices were calculated using the per-ounce price of that product.
I still say there is no way that the Lufthansa kit (which I know reasonably well) is worth $72 or the Cathay kit (which I know even better) is worth $123.
Interesting remarks from the article:
- premium customers want organic ingredients. Thus Delta has dumped L'Occitane. Delta passengers prefer lemongrass-wasabi soap.
- Watermark Group, a British company, makes kits for 100 carriers. It sells 3 million bags each month.

Gee anybody know of a market for SQ kits? I'd be happy to be able to sell a few for 1/2 of $85
(to buy more travel of course)
Even on ebay I rarely see 1st class kits for sale (tho I don't check much) - and certainly not at these prices! I guess you can use math (incorrectly) to come up with any value you want (eg you can buy the expensive contents of the SQ kit - bulgari perfume and hand lotion for about $25)

I had loads of KLM ones here a few years back when I really was a frequent flyer. Flogged them all on ebay, one guy kept buying them every few days. In the end I did a deal with him for the whole lot. Turned out he gave them to his staff as an incentive
Ok the contents were Molton Brown but I'd need something more than that to motivate me !

I doubt they are worth much, even though I've heard the non-BA Anya Hindmarch cases sell in stores for high prices. I stayed with a friend in Baltimore and she had a pink Clinique makeup box that was made of the same material and to the exact specs of my Anya Hindmarch box.
