Tipping for in-room check-in

I searched the forums (no results) but was just curious whether (and how much) I should tip if I get in-room check-in service. Any thoughts?

I don't think it's appropriate. One doesn't really tip front desk agents or hotel managers.

Thanks. That's what I thought too, since those are front desk agents who simply walk up to the room to check a guest in. On the other hand, one could argue that's it's an extra service, which may warrant tips.

At any rate, I've never tipped for in-room check-in but was just curious what other thought.

.
Errr - I would regard it as either
a) included in the cost of the room
b) a marketing gimmick of the hotel

It is not undertaken at your specific request but is the arrangement a hotel has for guests in certain rooms grades.

In any case, if I worked on the front desk, I would welcome to opportunity to walk around and chat with guest rather than to stand around waiting to serve guests or be hassled by long queues of guests standing in line waiting to be served.

If it's not something that hotel usually does, if it's apparently out of the employees job description (if they're hourly), and if it's in a tipping-safe country, then tip away.

I wonder if someday the U.S. will be service charge and salary-free and everybody will pay with tips only?

You mean it's the same as making up/cleaning your room? I always assumed that would be included in the cost of the room as well (never thought of b) though).

I always tip the room maids. They perform much more actual "service" for me than do most people whom I am "required" to tip.
