Anyone know if it would be possible to safely transport donuts in checked luggage? or are the bag's tossed around too much ? Thanks David |

Hmm, ok i need to think of another way to transport donuts over the 1000km. |
Just how many doughnuts are you planning to transport? Woudn't carry on work for a dozen or two?

I'm thinking roadtrip, but even with 2 people its still a 11 hour drive :( which will not result in great donuts. (aim is to buy donuts at 1.50 each, and sell for 4 dollars each) So 30 dollars profit per box. Cheapest flight is 110 dollars, cheapest mileage earning flight is 180. So if its air travel i need at least 4 boxes to cover airfare + then transport from home airport to distribution point. Donut shop is in destination terminal so no costs on that side. |

After reading this thread you might have a different take: AA mechanic claims a 762 contained 900-1000 mice, mostly dead ones |

Brisbane is Krispy Kreme less, there might be money to be made here :-p |

LOL.... a black market for donuts! :D
Maybe your venture would be worth investing in a hardened case? (PS - I knew this had to have had something to do with Krispy Kreme...) |
$4 AUD, remember our min wage here is around 20 dollars.
so thats 5 donuts per hours work. In Chicago they were 89 cents each from memory. And whats min wage in america? 6/7 dolalrs? so about 7 donuts per hour. I think the demand exists, allready got got plenty of interest at 2.50 a donut ($30 a box) so maybe i can go for volume > Price. This all seems alittle far fetched, but it's looking allright to me, but that might be because of the stress of the past week of exams and that i would love the chance to take a few trips to sydney :) |
Are you sure customs is going to let you in with cases of doughnuts?

I wouldn't expect them to hold up well.
As an aside, I don't get the craze over Krispy Kreme. |
They wouldn't get crushed in a standard hard-shell suitcase. You ought to be able to get a couple of used ones fairly cheap at a second-hand store. They might get bounced around a bit, so use bubble wrap or something similar (crushed newspapers might do the job) to cushion them. I think they'd arrive in salable condition.
That said, I seem to remember some good donuts last winter (June, to avoid confusion) in one of the food areas below street level off the Queen Street Mall. I'm surprised there's a market for KK in Brisbane, but if you say so... |

And checking your donuts is a good way to have them eaten by hungry TSA employees. |
Are Krispy Kreme doughnuts THAT nice? I've tried one or two and found them to be somewhat lacking in taste. Maybe I need to try more of them :D
|
It sounds like you're going to have to invest in Tupperware or something like that. You'll just have to get protection for those precious donuts.

even with carryon, they're still going to get knocked around a bit.
The cardboard cases just aren't there for anything more than a bit of protection and show. Then again, I have put a tray full into my backpack and brought them home from SYD-BNE and they survived reasonably well. (Keep in mind that the chocolate will melt a little and ruin their appearance as well. Lots of issues to keep in mind). |

Pack em dry and pad them well with corrugated wax paper and a hard case.
They should survive a SYD-BNE flight. Just make sure the air can circulate a bit.. I've transported a cheese cake from NYC to SJC. in one piece. ok ok.. it was in a carry on, packed with a dry ice. It was one smoking package. |

I think Australia qualifies for that. |

I've been around those damn donuts for most of my life (here in the southeast USA) and they are my LAST choice for a donut. When I was in college (35 years ago) we sold boxes of them for fundraisers, and today I see homeless people selling boxes of them at the subway entrances. I didn't like 'em then, and I don't like 'em now. |

Not that Australia has the death penalty, but the first person who realizes that you're selling him conterfeit KKs will choke you with the rest of the donuts. |
I remember the craze. Why not just open up your own KK, and sell immediately? If I recall correctly KK has been in some deep troubles with their franchisee's. Give me a good bakery doughnut instead of those KK. Hell even give me a Mr Doughnut over a KK. Heck...if I were Canadian, try Tim Hortons.
To the OP, If you're thinking of that..just fedex em, you can always claim that it got damaged in shipping. |
there is no denying that a fresh Krispy Kreme donut is very good. However, once the novelty wears off and the lines are gone and the donuts sit for a while, I'll take a Dunkin Donut (blueberry please) anytime.

let me check with my friend, curious George. He bought 100 dozen once.
|
We Canadians know that Tim Horton's donuts are clearly superior to the sugar bombs otherwise known as Krispy Kreme! :o :D What can I say? We have good taste! ;)
|
Who cares whether Krispy Kreme donuts are any good, or if Americans were previously and Australians are currently suckers fooled by a silly fad? The man seems to have a reasonable, if optimistic, business case and is seriously pondering funding a mileage run by selling donuts on the black market!! Nobody said it would be easy, but hey, let's applaud his ambition, and maybe it will work out.
If you had the opportunity to fly around for free, funded by fulfilling the desires of desperate, tubby office workers who think that spending AU$4 will bring a ray of hope to their sad and lonely existence, wouldn't you do it? |
I remember flying DJ last year SYD-MEL And passengers were bringing on those KK trays filled with donuts as their carryon.
goodo |
This thread seems destined for the next issue of TalkMail. :D

Hmm, even a night of drinking couldn't convice my mates that it might work.
They are willing to help with driving if we can get enough pre-orders to cover the costs of a roadtrip to Sydney. (although they would be 12+ Hours old by the time we reach brisbane again, so yeah maybe 2 dollars a donut would work). And yeah we all know that KK is just a fad, but we have no alternative, the donuts you can get here are more like mini sponge cakes, not a yummy fluffy donut :) I would have opened a KK years ago, but one company bought all the rights for australia. :( |

Meetings in dark alleys, smoke filled back rooms and lookout men.....for donuts!!
Seriously though. A hard bag with a few dissacant <sp?> bags might be the way to go. The change in temp and humidity from take off to crusing and the reverse might destroy the tasty treats. the dissacant might help to keep them dry (ish) longer Good luck..and keep your eyes open for a sting!! :p

If you actually try to start a grey-market Krispy Kreme outlet, I would expect the authorities to get involved, if only for health code enforcement. There are probably also trademark restrictions too. KK would argue that reselling old airshipped dounuts devalues its brand, etc.
You can probably get away doing a few in a one-off sale. The idea of fast food arbitrage has had some semi-serious analysis. You could make USD$5.74 each by buying Big Macs in China and selling them in Norway. You'd have to figure the cost of a lot of heat lamps to cover the flight, though. |
KK donuts are awful unless they are hot. I need to open a Tim Hortons in Sydney.
Do you guys have a hockey player I can name the donut shop after? :D My guess is like London bagels will be big in Australia soon. Bagel shop anyone? |
