I totally agree. Before being taken to Paris for a christmas gift by my boyfriend I had negative feelings about Paris. That was because I had heard negative comments about the city and about the people. Of course I was so excited to go to the beautiful, art filled, cultural city and I totally agree it is underrated. Paris is a beautiful city and I would love to go back again. The people and the culture are beautiful. ^

Strassbourg is absolutely lovely. Warm and friendly people, terrific cuisine, beautiful landscape.

Also, another vote for charming Nrnberg, and not just at Christmastime.

Chicago is the most underrated food city in North America.

London.
I don't know why, it just appeals to me. Maybe it's the accents.

Atlanta and some parts of Michigan.
For their UNsuperficiality.

Bangkok.
Though it's not the most beautiful city in the world, it's tons of fun. The people are humble, and the shopping in that city is funfunfun.

San Francisco.
But it was never underrated to begin with, right?

I was thinking about saying Newcastle too Great city! Friendly people and fun nightlife!

- Prague
- Kuala Lumpur
- Queenstown (just for how scenic and beautifull it is)
- Orlando (Nothing to do with the parks)

Bangalore, India. No one hears about it, but with the tech boom happening, it's growing into a comopolitan city. I went to numerous fabulous restaurants and bars there. Definately worth a stop in India.

Lisbon (although it seems that it is not underrated on this Forum!)

Prague is great, but hardly underrated.

St. Petersburg is underrated (although there is room for improvement).

I second that. I skipped Nara my first visit to Japan because it wasn't as high profile as places like Kyoto. On my second trip I visited Nara and scolded myself for almost missing this gem of a city.

Nagasaki was cool too, very picturesque, but not as wonderful as Nara.

i'll second Ottawa, its not nearly as boring as it is made out to be... the politicians make for an interesting nightlife
Calgary and Victoria are also highly underrated, Calgary in particular is a lot of fun

Great thread

I love this kind of topic.

I'm fascinated by all the acclaim for Lisbon. I'll have to put that on my list.

Here's one that's off the beaten path: Torun, Poland. A quaint medieval university town, home of Nicolas Copernicus (and a gigantic university named after him). Poland in general is the "undiscovered country." Really cheap. My nephew married a Polish girl and I went to the wedding in Torun. The Poles all rave about Gdansk and Krakow, so I'd love to see those, too. But you better learn some Polish! (And it's hellishly difficult.)

Count me in on the Paris bandwagon. I don't know why it's gotten such a bad rap. I found people went out of their way to be nice to me there, even when they didn't know I spoke some French. And if you make an effort in French, it is much appreciated. They'll switch to English if that's more efficient. I've never found it dirty, either.

I'm headed to Istanbul in June. I noticed it was on the USA Today list. I'll let you know if it deserves it!

Oh, and I also liked Athens. Post-Olympics, it seems to have gotten its act together. I really enjoyed my visit, and Athens normally gets heavy criticism for some reason.
