If FTers don't say something about this loudly, it may become a reality very very soon. I vote a resounding :td: :td: :td: :td: |
If it would lower the cost of my seat, and I'm flying coach - I'm all for it

Does America West do this on tray tables?
The blog referred to this being done already on America West... anyone?... anyone?

Sample Ad agency (caution: noisy Flash page, mute your sound first) Western Pacific did outside advertising on their planes. Closest to bin advertising is probably Southwest's Shamu(R) jets. It's been a long time since I've flown one, but I think they have penguins or other sea life along the bins. No Sea World logos per se, though. |

Alaska Airlines had (and maybe still has) a plane that was decked out in Disney livery, which makes sense because they fly to Orange County and sell Disneyland vacation packages.

My last trip on one of the 737-200s, possibly the last time ever in a JT8D engined aircraft so universal over the previous 40 years, was on the Hertz one. |

When I first saw ads above urinals, I laughed; how clever. When I first saw ads applied to the sidewalks of New York, I shook my head; clever, but that's public space being defaced. When I first saw ads before movies, I got angry; I'm paying $10 to see this dreck and you're making me watch ads?!? Now I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!!! ;) |

The idea of selling ad space, then selling premium seats without ads is brilliant. I see a future for you in marketing... ;) |
Once we get used to the advertising it will not be as bad as we think. Remember when television networks started putting their logo in the corner of the screen. The logo was distracting and I was outraged that a portion of the screen was covered. Now, who cares. In fact it is easy to tell which channel I am watching.
How about advertising on the boards around a hockey rink. that was controversial when it started, now standard for the NHL. If I see a replay of an old game, the plain white boards just don't look right. |
Are we headed back to the circa 1900 era when there were ads plastered everywhere? :( (look at some old photos of cities; they were all over any flat surface)
Something else interesting is that these ads of yore were often for "snake oil" (all sorts of medical remedies that did nothing). They were put out of business with the FDA. Today, what are a lot of ads for? Lifestyle enhancement drugs! Round and round we go.... |

We live in a marketing intense world. Our consumer response to this via our spending habits justify the efforts companies make to stick their stuff in our faces every where we turn. I'm willing to bet money that most LCC's will have interior marketing/ads within the next 5 years. It is not a matter of IF, but WHEN. I am still chuckling over the fact that they have now physically altered the trunk (boot - UK) of many taxi's so that they can slap a big advertising piece on the back of the taxi's lift-up lid. What's next square taxi's so that every surface is advertising friendly? It is going to look like a circus-bus when all is said and done. Airplanes will follow suit, at least inside.

I can see the ad now:
Don't like ads on your Southwest flight? Remember, United never has ads...fly United. Brilliant! |
