a good book about SABRE

access to SABRE is now mine and I think it would be a great help in building runs. i checked amazon.com for a "sabre for dummies" type book and came up with nothing. can anyone recommend a good book or website that covers SABRE?

Not really - if you have a friend who works for AA you could get a copy of the employee manual for it

The SABRE handbook that I have in my desk at work is a good one

But FWIW, the IMAGE program that AS uses is much more user friendly.

Please forgive me for an OT question...

How did you get SABRE access? Did you sign up with a host travel agency?

IIRC SABRE does offer some type of free training for new TAs ... I know that there's a training manual, but there might also be an actual seminar in your area.

If you have sabre PCC/login password you can always try some free sabre online training and the in-depth Format finder available online at
https://eservices.sabre.com/

I find sabre's Format Finder really useful. It allows you to quickly look for Sabre Commands by category and has some good examples.

Would also be interested. Many of the books I have read / sites I have been to explain that you don't need a travel agents license to start a business, you can just start it up... however they fail to mention how you make any money without access to a GDS program

Cheers

Some states require travel agents to be licensed or bonded, others don't. So you need to check the requirements in each state.

The travel agent industry is generally not one you get into for making lots of money, especially when it comes to airline tickets. Most people in it are so for other reasons - they love what they do, like to help others plan great trips, etc.

Same reason for me, I doing it for fun, but would like to make enough money to cover the costs of starting up. Mabye $50 a month or so.

Yes, all you need is to fill out an application and pay 40 bucks a month and you can have access to Sabre, Worldspan, Amadeus, and Apollo.

I access them through these guys (owned by sabre): www.nexion.com

As for the original question, Sabre has a set of training CDs that are very dated but very helpful, I pretty much used them and the Format Finder to get up to speed.
