Great Escapade & getting a FF card?

Yo,

I'm planning a Great Escapade RTW trip in Spring next year. However, a friend mentioned it might be worth looking into getting a Frequent Flyer card for this trip.

Having never using a FF card before, I was wondering whether the benefits would be worth it? (As from what I understand, I can only reap the benefits _AFTER_ I've made the flights which is a bit of a minus).

Planned route is...
LON-LAX-NAN-AKL-CHC-SYD-HKG-SIN-LON, probably with a short hop using SilkAir from Singapore to perhaps Siem Reap, or somewhere around Singapore (to max out my Great Escapade allowance, which is 29,000 miles, I believe )

For 29,000 miles, split roughly 1/3 between SQ, NZ and VS, is a FF card worth it? Can I use any of the FF card benefits DURING the trip?

Yes, benefits after the trip are well worth it. Sign up for SQ's Krisflyer program if it is your intention to fly a lot on SQ and also to redeem on SQ.

Yes, you get the miles after each flight.
You may redeem for any Star Alliance carrier of course, but be reminded SQ is one of the very best.

mrdini, welcome to FT, from another newbie!

Using Krisflyer (SQ's FFP) as an example, even if you do not get to enjoy the benefits during the trip, by the end of your RTW trip, you would have earned enough miles to
- become an Elite Silver member
- redeem an award ticket to as far as Vietnam or Philippines from Singapore

Since your RTW starts and end in LON, I am assuming that you reside in the UK. That means that flying on BMI and Virgin also earn you miles on KF. Star Alliance flights are also eligible for mileage accrual (of course subject to terms and conditions ). Only thing is KF miles only last 3 years before expiring.

Essentially, a FFP is just like Tesco's Clubcard, or Sainsbury's Nectar Card, except that it is largely used in travel.

For more information, visit the various FFP websites:

Singapore Airlines Krisflyer

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Air New Zealand Airpoints

Look through the benefits and decide which one is the most suitable for you.

Finally, enjoy your trip!

If you fly in premium classes, BMI and LH have good FFPs.
