Have you stayed in Hostels? a Hostel DO?

Looking to get discuss hostels other FT'ers have stayed at. Unfortunetly I do not know where to post this because of a lack of a forum. So here it is. I have stayed at numerous hostels in the US and Europe. Some bad some good. Taking another trip to Europe in February. Need some recommendations. Also post a reply if you like the idea of a forum that would include reviews of hostels and related topics.

I believe that our TravelBuzz forum would be the place to start with this. Since your Q concerns hostels generally. I'll move it there for further discussion. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator.

I find Hostelz to be a good page for hostel-reviews.

My favorite hostel was Museum Guest House in Budapest. Nice location, lots of fun people. We renamed it the Hotel California because people checked in, but no one wanted to leave.

best view i've ever had at a hostel was the Mt Davis, Hong Kong Island one.. the hostel itself is a bit remote but the view of the harbor and the Lantau island bridge is golden on a clear night.

These days, can probably see HK Disney from there.

www.hostelworld.com is a great site.

I've stayed at great hostels in Costa Rica, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Holland, and Ireland. Hostelworld gives reviews and pictures so you know what you're getting into.

My favorites:

J-Hopper in Kyoto, Japan
La Vista Serena in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

im a little dismayed by the fact that it this thread was moved so quickly. if the moderator didnt read the title all the way through, i was trying to plan an event or a DO. which if memory serves me right belongs in the community part. im specifically looking for hostels in italy, ams, germany and possibily poland.

A second to that entire post. I hostelled across Japan ten years ago after spending some time with a family in the Northern end of the country, and if you can find good ones, it can be a great experience if you have neither the cash nor the inclination to go the hotel route. Many friends have stayed places in Europe, I'll check with them as well and post any that they feel merit the mention!

Your intitial post (except for the title which isn't clear itself) mentioned nothing about a DO and was just asking for info on hostels. You even stated in it that you weren't sure it was in the right place. That is likely why it was moved.

I seem to remember a 60 minutes a year or so ago mentioning that bed bugs were an issue at all levels of hotels: one guest brings them in and everyone afterward deals with them, including bringing them home. With people travelling more and more, bed bugs are making a comeback. The person who stays in your Sheraton bed the night before could very well have brought them in.

Hostels in the US (at least in CA) always seem to have plastic mattresses, in part to deal with this issue. (not the most comfortable thing to sleep on though).
