My daughter and I woke up to a strange noise in our room at the Kaui Hyatt. We turned on the light and found a rat sitting on the nightstand between our beds - gnawing on a cookie my daughter had left there! A call to the front desk and a change of rooms ( better view!) happened at that point.

mr kay was alone on business in china--before i came along--and there was a persistant knocking at his hotel door in the middle of the night. he answered to find a woman in a wedding dress asking in english, if he 'required any special services.'

um, no thanks.

(at least that's the story as he told it to me )

Happens very frequently in Russia and China, less often elsewhere. In Bangkok you can meet all sorts of interesting people in hotel corridors, although I've yet to have one try to come into my room. But just last week in Kuala Lumpur, staying in a very respectable hotel at that, I was awakened around 4-5 AM by insistent doorbell ringing. Still groggy, I figured it was morning already and it was my colleagues coming to wake me up or something and opened the door... only to find not one but two scantily dressed ladies at my door. They were as surprised to see me as I them, but I told them they had the wrong room and closed the door.

Speculation at the breakfast table that morning was mostly centered on what sort of person feels the need to dial up multiple escorts at 5 in the morning, and whether their bill was prepaid...

Checked in late one night to the Marriott in Zurich - got my key card and proceeded to my room. I opened the door and it looked a little strange as the light wasn't on and I think the bedspread was on the floor. Next thing I know I heard a scream - and shamefully, I screamed at the same time - as a lady in the bed sat up and asked me to leave immediately.. Not sure how it happened but they'd coded my key and given us both the same room... since then, I have always put the safety catch on the door every night!

I'm like "whoah!!" "Who are you guys?" I get the quizical look and then "You call for escort yes?".

The penny drops, the hooker thinks I'm naked and ready for action . "Um no, I didn't actually". The pimp pipes up "yes you did". By now I'm getting a little agitated... "Um NOOOOO, I'm married and on my honeymoon, you definitely have the wrong room"... (DOOR CLOSES FIRMLY).

Anyone else had uninvited guests show up, other than cockroaches?

This story also might make a good entry in the recent "Revenge" thread. (i.e., it suggests a way one might recompense a troublesome neighbor).

My take on the incident is somewhat different. I would think that the two individuals who knocked on your door pretending that you had called them were really thieves, if not worse. Their pretense that they thought you had called them was really just "social engineering," to get in the door (or to cover up being caught trying to break and enter). I would have called downstairs to the desk immediately and insisted they check those two out. Call me suspicious, but I think that explanation could be possible.

I checked into the Seatac Embassy Suites around dinnertime and walked into an obviously occupied room. I turned around and walked into the occupants returning from dinner-- A very awkward moment.

Being pressed by a hooker and her pimp for some business at 1am meant I wasn't in the best frame of mind to take in all the details. if it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo
