Do you tip in hotels?

When staying in a hotel, do you leave a tip for the maids? Do you tip doormen? When do you tip - once per stay, or every day? Do you tip more if it's a higher-end property or do you reward a clean room equally?

Just curious - and no need to list tip amounts if you feel that's too personal.

The hotels I stay at usually don't have doormen
And unless the room is perfect, no tip for the housekeeping staff either.

I do tip the maids. I once helped a friend with his small property right here in Sarasota when his wife's sister had cancer and she wanted to visit her in Israel.

It was 2 guys running a 10 unit island cottage hotel. We had to do everything. Front desk, maintanance and room service. For the 2 months I was there I truly hated the room cleaning part of the job. I was grateful that most of our guests stayed for at least 3 days. Majority stayed 1 week, as the was an island destination. I do not wish this job on my worst enemy.

I tip the maids according to the average local wages. In return I had found that any and all of my requests for service above the normal was happily provided. I always leave a little note, thanking the maid and if I needed requesting something extra. My last 2 stays at the Conrad Hotels in BKK and HKG resulyed in a nice collection of Teddy Bears and Elephants. All I did was to request an extra stuffed animal for my sister's second child and I found more of these everyday on my bed when I returned from my sightseeing. These were sold for about $10 in the lobby gift shop and I tipped around $3 depending on how much change I had that morning.

I almost always tip the maid, usually around $5/day at high end properties. I try to leave a tip every day, although at many properties the maids will not take the tip unless they are absolutely certain they are for them.

I do not tip the doormen for holding the door, and usually not for hailing cabs, but when they help me load and unload luggage, I tip them like I would a bellman (usually $5, although I'll tip the bellman $10 if I'm traveling with my wife and daughter and we've brought all of our worldly possessions).

I'll also tip the concierge, up to about $20, for scoring a hard-to-get ticket or reservation.

One thing I do is to search the forum for previous discussions of a topic before starting a new one.

This is something I have thought about as well. I honestly never tip chambermaids, although I suppose that I should. I always tip doormen when they hail me a cab ($1-2) and more when they load/unload luggage ($5). I also tip the concierge if they go out of their way to get me a reservation at a restaurant that claims to be booked up, or if they score me some good tickets ($5-10).

I was at the Park Hyatt in LA last week and the maid walked in on me as I was getting out of the shower...I probably should have tipped her!

Bellman- $5
Doorman- really depends- from nothing to $40 (if for example I left my car out front a few times)
Conceirge- Depends on services- from nothing to $100
Housekeeping-$5 per day on avg
Exception: If the hotel has a service charge (ie in Asia most properties have a 15% service charge)-then no.

This has been discussed at length in Travelbuzz so you might want to do a search to get specific tipping information which might help you.

As for me, I tip the maids. As for doormen and porters, I am self-sufficient therefore I don't need their services.

I always tip the maids and the valet at hotels. It's a courtesy, but I also get whatever I want with a smile. I give a buck to the valet for dropping off the car or departing and the maids 2-3 dollars every day. It does add up for extended periods of stay, but I feel good about it.

I tip the chamber maid $1/day, $2 on the last night ($2 if I'm only there one night). They probably don't get paid much, and it seems like dirty and lonely work.

So they'll know it's a tip and not just money I left lying around, I'll write "thank you! " on a piece of notepaper and leave it on the money.

Occasionally, I'll skip the tip, if there's a problem with the cleanliness of the room.

i tip the maids a couple of bucks a day on the last night...but reading the other posts it suddenly occurs to me that tipping nightly might result in better service. if it's a luxury property, i tip a bit more.

doorman gets nothing for a cab (unless i'm in nyc, then he gets a buck) and $3-5 for helping me with my luggage; ditto bellman, depending how many bags there are.

an old boyfriend tipped the valet $5 to bring him his car the first night of a longer stay and at least two dollars each time after. he never had to wait for his car to come around. i tip a few bucks the first night and a dollar each time after...still get pretty quick car retrieval.

I tip the maids a few dollars per day. If I use the services of the bellman/porter, he's tipped $1-2 per bag. In some cases, I've gone shopping and had the bellman bring my purchases up to my room when I can't carry them myself . That usually results in a $5 tip.

I also tip the car valet $1 per in and out.

I tip for maidservice from $2-5 a daily depending on the property. Heck, I'd do that at home too if I could find someone as reliable who would come in every day to clean my bathroom, stock fresh towels, empty the wastebaskets, make by bed daily with fresh laundered sheets, pick up clothes that fell off the hanger and are sitting in a heap on the floor of the closet, vaccuum carpets, sweep floors, and organize cluttered surfaces around the room. These are some of the things maids do at the properties I frequent. What a bargain!

Another good reason to tip daily is that if your timing is poor, you may not be tipping the maid who has taken care of you all week.
