Fly to Finland?

I am trying to get tickets to fly to Finland next month to see my brother. I hardly ever fly and was hoping for some pointers to get the best price?
Thanks

cbf5,

First of all, welcome to FlyerTalk!

The Mileage Run forum is meant for discussions on earning maximum miles and points through things such as creative routings, unusually low fares, and other methods.

Your question, in looking for assistance in finding a low fare, is not really related specifically to mileage runs or miles and points in general. As such, I'm going to move it to the TravelBuzz forum where you can hopefully get more assistance in your effort.

Thanks for joining the community!

The only direct flight from US is the Finnair flight from JFK to HEL. SAS has several flights from their US gateway cities to Sweden and Denmark. Denmark/Sweden is only a short hop away from HEL if that is your final destination in Finland.

My actual goal is Estonia, but it is much cheaper to fly to Helsinki and take a ferry then to fly into Estonia.

A good point for all Estonia Bound travellers.

Helsinki - Tallinn ferries usually run around $35-40 return, take 2 hours at most, and have very frequent service.

If there's an extreme difference in price, this is a viable alternative...

Not sure if this will save you any money but it's worth checking.

If you could get a good fare to Amsterdam then you could connect there with www.blue1.com/en/, a new budget airline. They fly between AMS and HEL everyday except Saturdays.

I think I might have a better idea:

Check out a site called EuropeByAir.

http://www.europebyair.com

They sell $99 oneways into Tallinn from Paris, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo (and Vilnuis, Kiev and Moscow).

Why not find a cheapish flight to one of those cities from your home airport, then use EuropeByAir to get the flights to/from Tallinn. I believe the flights are on Estonian Air.

Best I could find was JFK (don't know where you're starting) to Milan on American for $700 round trip, then to TLL on Volare for 80 Euros one way, around US$300 less than a direct flight.

For a good guide to discount intra-Europe airlines, go to http://www.whichbudget.com

That's a great idea:

Get a cheap Southwest-market(s) flight from LAS to BWI or MCO (Airports served by both WN and FI) and then use Icelandair to HEL. This also gives you the ability to check 50/70 lbs per bag all the way to HEL (not the 20 kg per person within Europe) and the possibility of a free stopover at KEF.

Then take the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn. ^

Cheapest o/w flight from AMS to TLL on Estonian Air is 64 eur+tax, cheapest FRA-TLL is 75 EUR+tax, cheapest LGW-TLL is 63GBP+tax.
