LAX - the LCC invasion

Seems like LAX has really turned into the lcc airport lately. I just read in the LA Times that AirTran will add 2 daily non stops LAX-DFW soon using 717's (adding to their flights to ATL on A320's, soon to be 737's). This on top of HP adding all sorts of non stops willy nilly, and Frontier turning LAX into a "focus city". Plus of course WN and their plethora of non-stops

Why do you think all of a sudden these lcc's have focused their energies on adding all these non-stops out of LAX?? Do you think it's because of the majors having so many monetary problems, the lcc's are swooping in to steal their business??

I'm just guessing, but I think it's due in part to the dismantling of UAL's hub at LAX, as well as the absence of slots and the easy availability of gates. IIRC, at its peak, UAL ran about twice the number of LAX flights as it does today, opening up all sorts of opportunities for the LCCs.

LAX is a natural hub for Southern California, and doesn't suffer from the weather/traffic problems SFO does. Also, it's probably less constrained then SNA or SAN and more convenient then ONT or LGB.

For the "right coast" I nominate Philly aka PHL for the latest LCC king.

This may sound strange, but you may want to consider Boston as one of the latest Low Cost Airports on the 'right coast'. Why? Well it is surprising the number of new (or expanded) LCC's are flying out of Logan. They include:

Air Canada's Jazz
AirTran
America West
ATA Airlines
JetBlue
Song

Yes, SouthWest Airlines is missing from this, but they do fly to Providence, RI and Manchester, NH - both one hour away and considered markets of Boston.

Well luckily I did that promotion last year where you send in your status info from another airline and you get LIFETIME elite on Air Trans. I have never flown them but if I have to....
