Wow. Super jealous. What decade are you in if you don't mind me asking. Just wondering how long it takes to get so close to all the countries. I'll be just over 80 in a few weeks... and I've been traveling like nuts to do it. Can't imagine adding another 100 to match you anytime soon. Although I would love to!

So this thread is still alive? It's been quite a few years, so now it's simpler for me to list the 9 countries I haven't been to (and why):
1 Syria (not a good time to visit)
2 Yemen (not a good time to visit)
3 Pakistan (a bit hesitant)
4 Mali (I want to visit Timbuktu but it's currently no-go)
5 Niger (not a good time to visit)
6 Burkina Faso (probably OK except near the borders with Mali and Niger)
7 Papua New Guinea (I'm set to visit the Mt. Hagen sing-sing festival later this year)
8 Dominica (waiting for them to repair hurricane damage)
9 Bahamas (saving for last since I'm fairly sure I'd be the only person in the world ever to have visited every country except the Bahamas)
Hopefully the rest of the posters on this thread have made progress in the years since the first post.

Well, my week in Dominica was cut short when a hurricane approached and my hotel boarded itself up and kicked me out after one day. (Once I was gone the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm.) I hate to count a country after just a day and a half, but I guess I should. So I'm down to 8 until my Papua New Guinea trip this fall.
Well, I'm in my 60s, so yes, I've been doing this for awhile. First trip to Europe at age 13 with a Eurailpass, which I used extensively. In those days, the dollar was worth 4.25 Swiss francs (today 0.95), 360 yen (today 110) so the world was fairly cheap and not as many Americans traveled.
North Korea has virtually no crime problem, and is perfectly safe (unless you do something stupid and run afoul of the government, of course). Most of the countries I have yet to visit are somewhat jihadi-infested at the moment, and I will just have to wait them out. I was fortunate to have visited Afghanistan and South Sudan before they fell apart completely.

I am adding Seychelles (#153) this month - after Samoa, the only new additions this year. I did reach my goal of 150 by age 40 with a few years to spare last year, and it is increasingly harder to add new countries now. With the demise of travbuddy, does anyone know a new linkable visited map site?
Its your list, count whatever you want. But there is a difference between counting for example Hong Kong vs Hawaii as a separate entity (like the silliness of TCC)

Yesterday I reached 25, going by their status when I was in each country, by spending the day in Tallinn. I'd get two more, 27, going by current borders as Belarus is no longer part of the Soviet Russian empire, and Slovakia and Czechia split in the Velvet Divorce.

Yes, sometimes it's hard to know how to count countries. For example, I've been to Somaliland, which is technically a part of Somalia but has its own independent government. Also, I've been to Kurdistan, technically a part of Iraq, but not controlled by Baghdad (where I've never been).
