how do you get to Capri?

From Naples or Rome?

I understand there's a ferry or hydrofoil or the like, I'm looking for more details...

There is no ferry/hydrofoil from Rome. You need to take the train to Naples, then get to the ferry dock (Molo Beverello) in Naples to catch a ferry/hydrofoil to Capri. There are several companies that operate that route. Ferry takes twice as long as hydrofoil but 1/2 the price.
Here's some more info at:

I was on Capri back in 1989. At that time, we were staying in Sorrento and took a day trip there.

You can go by "slow" ferry or "fast" hydro-foil. See the blue grotto; touristy; but definitely cool.

Naples or Sorrento would be the starting point.

Yes, you can take ferry/hydrofoil from Sorrento as well.
However, Sorrento is south of Naples. Getting to Sorrento from Rome would involve taking Trenitalia train from Rome to Naples, then changing for the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento, then taking a bus or taxi from Sorrento's train station to its ferry port.

So unless you want to tour Sorrento, you should take the ferry/hydrofoil from Naples.

I searched Google for "how to get to Capri" and got this":
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">How to get to Capri

NAPLES HAS TWO PLACES TO GO TO CAPRI: From the pier in Mergellina or from the pier Molo Beverello

From Capodichino Airport to the pier:

- take a taxi to the harbour where your ship leaves from

or

- take the shuttle bus to downtown (Piazza Municipio) then walk to Molo Beverello. The fare is 10.000 lire and it leaves approximately every 30/40 minutes (buy your before boarding the bus).

From the train station "Mergellina" to the pier:

- if you leave from Mergellina pier, walk (700 mt.), or take a taxi

- if you leave from Molo Beverello, take a taxi (approximate cost 15.000 lire) or take bus No. (buy your bus ticket Giranapoli, 1.500 lire, before boarding the bus)

Note: the Italian Railways timetable is available on http://orario.fs-on-line.com/.

From the train station "Napoli Centrale" to the pier:

- if you leave from Mergellina pier, take the subway ("metropolitana") to Napoli Mergellina, which is both a train and a subway station (buy your ticket Giranapoli, 1.500 lire, before boarding).

- if you leave from Molo Beverello, either take a taxi (approximate cost 15.000 lire) or take tram (=streetcar) No. 1 (buy your bus ticket Giranapoli, 1.500 lire, before boarding the bus)

Hydrofoil (suggested): hydrofoils leave either from the pier in Mergellina or from the pier Molo Beverello. The ride from Naples to Capri Marina Grande takes about 30 minutes.

I have been in Naples and Capri several times, and I believe the trip was much longer(!?!) .. you should visit Naples, very interesting town.

Yes, in Naples you can catch the ferry/hydrofoil from either Molo Beverello or Mergellina. Molo Beverello is much closer to the town than Mergellina.

If you want to go further down the coast, you can also take a hydrofoil from Positano.

If you don't plan to stay there, you can also rent a boat in Positano and take yourself there.

Is Naples still as full of pickpocketers as it was last time I was there (1995)? Or have they cleaned up their act? Frankly, I'm not inclined to go back and see the town, just because of that...

Thanks for the suggestions.

In season, you can also get a ferry/hydrofoil to Capri from the island of Ischia. Unfortunately to get to Ischia you must get a ferry from Naples. Ischia is kind of a poor mans Capri. It also has a lot of hot springs that are piped into the hotels.
