A few years ago (~1998) a coworker and I got upgraded on MTY-IAH-TPA for a "tip" of about $50 to the checkin agent in MTY. We had no status, and in fact it was the first time either of us had ever flown CO. It happens, or rather used to happen. Can't say if it'd still work now though.

If you tip *after* getting the favor, it's not a bribe. However you can give something far more valuable if you write a commendation letter to the airline.
