Longest Flight?

I'm not sure of the best way to search for this, but figured maybe a fellow FT'er already knows this....

What is the current longest flight (flight time) non-stop between two destinations??

A couple of us at work were talking and we were just curious.

Thanks!

Before any answers to this I would guess it would involve Australia. If there is no Europe to Australia than a US to Australia flight.

Singapore Airlines has revealed plans for the world's longest nonstop commercial flight, which should take to the skies on 3 February, 2004.

It means passengers will be able to fly directly between Singapore and Los Angeles without having to disembark at Tokyo or Taipei airports while their plane is refuelled.

Potential flyers will need to have the stamina to endure 16 hours on board their aircraft on the journey to the United States, while the flight back to the Far East will take a whopping 18 hours and 20 minutes

The SIA A345LeaderShip, which was unveiled in mid-October, will operate a 16 hour non-stop service to Los Angeles, and an 18.5 hour service on the return journey from Los Angeles to Singapore. This service will save customers between 1.5 and two hours in flight time over SIAs current one-stop flights.

A similar service to New York will follow in August 2004. This flight will take 18 hours in each direction and will cut travel times by two hours from New York to Singapore, and six hours from Singapore to New York.

Since this thread is not a "Discussion of the latest frequent flyer program buzz... " I am going to move it over to Travel.

After performing a simple search using the FlyerTalk search engine with the words Longest Flight for the subject only, I came up with these amazing and surprisingly varied results:

Longest US domestic non-stop flight?
Longest flight on single aisle plane
Longest Regional Jet flight
Longest transatlantic flight.
The longest flight-drive time
longest and shortest commercial flights?
Soon to be a new "longest flight in the world" LAX-SIN
Longest flight in a narrow body plane

Imagine what the results might have been if I had chosen Entire Message instead of Subject Only!

----------------------

I needed to correct one of the links, which is why

This may be true, but the CO HKG-EWR route operates non-stop in both directions year-round - JNB-ATL doesn't. I have flown on the CO flight, and it indeed is a long one. I've been on perhaps two dozen crossings of the Pacific Ocean, which are 10-14 hours depending on direction and city pairs involved. But, the extra couple of hours on the CO flight really made it seem long!

When considering the longest route, it's time in the air that matters and not the straight line distance from point to point. The EWR-HKG flight travels straight up above the pole and back down to HKG making it the longest route by any airliner in terms of actual travel time.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">But how much of a breakthrough is Singapore's new slingshot? To find out, we turned to OAG (www.oag.com), the masters of global flight schedules. They publish the definitive worldwide flight guides, and if anyone has obscure airline data, they do. They came through with a list of the 10 longest flights in the world:

1. Newark-Hong Kong on Continental, 16 hours.
2. Chicago-Hong Kong on United, 15 hours 50 minutes.
3. LA-Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, 15 hours 45 minutes.
4. Delhi-Toronto on Air Canada, 15 hours 30 minutes.
5. LA-Guangzhou on China Southern Airlines, 15 hours 21 minutes.
6 (tie). LA-Melbourne on Qantas, 15 hours 20 minutes.
6 (tie). Atlanta-Johannesburg on SAA, 15 hours 20 minutes.
7 (tie). Taipei-New York on China Airlines, 15 hours 10 minutes.
7 (tie). Hong Kong-Toronto on Air Canada, 15 hours 10 minutes.
7 (tie). Atlanta-Seoul on Korean Air, 15 hours 10 minutes.

FWIW, the longest route in the states is HNL-EWR.

aloha

I've been watching ads for the SFK-JFK flights the last few days here in Guam. I was impressed by that distance in on straight shot. I looked up some of the distances of routed people mentioned. Any of them are a long time to spend on a plane.

From To Distance
SIN (0121'21"N 10359'15"E) JFK (4038'23"N 7346'44"W) 9537 mi
SIN (0121'21"N 10359'15"E) LAX (3356'33"N 11824'29"W) 8770 mi
EWR (4041'33"N 7410'07"W) HKG (2218'32"N 11354'53"E) 8065 mi
ATL (3338'26"N 8425'37"W) JNB (2608'21"S 2814'46"E) 8439 mi
SYD (3356'46"S 15110'38"E) LAX (3356'33"N 11824'29"W) 7488 mi

That might or might not be true, but 1st class is not offered on either the New York or the LAX non-stops to Singapore.

Nevertheless, SQ J is quite nice (60 movies on demand on a big screen and excellent food on demand).

The JNB to ATL flight is certainly a rough one. As mentioned a refueling stop in the Isla do Sal is required, and since you can't get off the plane the total time spent sitting is around 18 hours.
