One-Way compared to Round Trip tickets

I'm tempted to purchase a round-trip ticket and not use the return ticket. This is to save almost $100. Anyone know of any repercussions/sanctions for doing this?

Suggestions??

Welcome, Betty!

You can do it but it's a violation of the rules. In practice, if you do it once you're extremely unlikely to get caught. People change travel plans all the time.

You might want to do a search on "throwaway ticketing" on this site for more opinions.

Some airlines (eg UA) don't prohibit it, so it probably makes sense to check with the particular airline.

But be sure to do so anonymously! Personally, I wouldn't think twice about buying a roundtrip ticket to save big over the cost of a one-way with the intent to discard the return portion. If you really are concerned, there are ways to cover-up the dirty deed such as politely calling the airline prior to the time of your return flight and letting them know that you won't be using the ticket because of something sympathetic like a family emergency.
