Does the initiator of a topic have the right to 'enforce' closing of a topic (by moderators), when others did already contribute valuable informations to it, and nothing really disturbing (flaming etc) happened?
In the early days of FlyerTalk, the originator of a topic was able to remove the whole topic by simply deleting his original post. But later that was considered unfair and the ability to do so was stopped.

I am with Rudi on this one... I do not believe a poster should be able to request to have a thread closed like that... if that is the case, if I post a thread... and people start disagreeing with me... then I can just have it closed... not right!
The exception I see is in Coupon Connection when an offer is no longer available... and I believe those moderators are handling that with class.

This is an interesting topic, although I see what Rudi and William are saying (especially William), I'm leaning a little toward a topic starter being able to request a thread closure. William's point is probably the most accurate in that people may abuse the ability to close a thread. So I am officially "on the fence and ambivalent"

I think Rudi makes a great point. Please start a new thread with the same topic.
I closed the thread due to a reason given by the original thread starter, but it had nothing to do with the topic.
Start the thread anew, please!

It's probably none of my business but I'm curious to know though for what reason did the original poster want the thread closed?
The original poster wanted an answer to a question - which he got. The thread then moved on to other semi-related topics (as threads invariably do), but the original poster was still getting responses by email.
If that was the reason for wanting the thread closed then I'd say "fair enough" - but perhaps a better solution would be to give the original poster the option of turning off the emailed responses. (Or does that option exist already? I've only started a thread once, so I'm not too familiar with that side of things)

And I agree the thread should be re-opened.
Anyone who checks the box asking for emails to be mailed and then asks for the thread be closed needs to get a grip .... if that was indeed the reason - there were SIX replies for goodness sakes! Is that a valid reason to close a busy thread? Disruptive to the flow for other FT'ers. Half the closed threads on FT would be getting locked on that basis.

I once (foolishly) checked that box on a thread that ended up with 400 posts. Drove me nuts. AND got me out of that habit VERY fast.

I think an original poster should be required to present a strong reason to the moderator in order to ask that the thread be closed.
