Bush scales back threat alert

From John King
CNN Washington Bureau
Tuesday, September 24, 2002 Posted: 12:26 PM EDT (1626 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush approved Tuesday lowering the government's assessment of terrorist threats down to "elevated" from "high," ending two weeks of a higher alert.

The decision means the country's color-coded alert status will drop from orange back to yellow, the midpoint of the scale.

I really don't see how this change in alert affects the run of the mill Joe Schmoe?

Agreed.

I believe that it is way for the government to show they are "on top of" the pulse of terrorist's threats, unlike a year ago.

The office building I work in now syncs security procedures to these alerts. e.g. when it went down to yellow they opened another set of entry doors and stopped wanding people with metal detectors.

What metal objects aren't permitted in your building?
