Headphones
I wanted to hear what you all have to say in reference to your experiences with "Noise Canceling Headphones".
Recently I splurged and got myself a pair of Bose "Noise Canceling Headphones" and I have to say I'm in love! They filter out a high percentage of the white noise around you and I find that it makes a huge difference flying with them vs. without them. I shopped around and tried on other brands, but nothing comes close to these- nada!
The thing I'm not clear on is what the "official" rules are for inflight use, specifically during take off & landing. Sometimes I'm told to remove them entirely, or the FA simply makes sure that they're not switched on, or they don't seem to care at all because they aren't hooked up to an electronic device.
Are they worth +$300 to you? What do you do to get some peace and quiet on a m-run?
And, what's the scoop on inflight use status?

I love them. I've had the low end ones, and can only dream of the high end ones some day.
On domestic airlines I've never been asked to turn them off, on international airlines (Alitalia, Turkish) they have asked I not use them at all.
I really don't think there are any rules for them at all, but have resorted to black tape over the red power led and not been bothered.

I think I may pick up the Bose QuietComfort headphones in the next month or so. Expensive at $299 (and seemingly no discounts available anywhere??) Does anybody have any other headphones better than these in this range? For those of you that have them, can you still hear crying babies? I understand it cuts out the "drone" of the plane quite well but wondered sounds that are not continuous.
