I love them. I've had the low end ones, and can only dream of the high end ones some day.

On domestic airlines I've never been asked to turn them off, on international airlines (Alitalia, Turkish) they have asked I not use them at all.

I really don't think there are any rules for them at all, but have resorted to black tape over the red power led and not been bothered.
