unaccompanied minors and security

How are the airlines going to handle the Unaccompanied minors if only ticket holders are allowed past security. It seems that if parents take the UM to security and then have to let them go with strangers and wait for the plane, then there is a distinct possibility of many, many, screaming, terrified children in the gate area.

I can't remember which ones but a number of U.S. airlines have stopped transporting unaccompanied minors as a result.

Suggest you check directly with the airline(s). Delta does have a notice on their home page regarding this. Others may also.

AND, even more important, the policy today may not be the same as the policy tomorrow. Plan accordingly.

I heard on the TV that one adult can accompany an otherwise unaccompanied minor to the gate. That doesn't solve the problem on the other side.

My sixteen year old recently visited a friend. She is quite independent, so I asked her if she felt uncomfortable if I met her at baggage claim. With a look of alarm she insisted that I meet her at the gate, and this is before the 11th.

I hope something can be done. Otherwise, there will be a lot of disappointed kids, parents, grandparents, etc.

My suggestion is that the airlines give a special fare to an adult accompanying a minor on a flight. Perhaps where the adult returns within 24 hours of arrival time.
They could rethink this when load factors go up to the point that the discount fare may be bumping a paying passenger.
