You don't need the beaten path. Great city!
Take a tour to Niagra if you have never seen the falls, but other than that be sure to stay in the city. See the Harbor area, China Town and catch a show (or two). Mama Mia is the best! Maybe your hotel can get you tickets. The show has been sold out for months, but I got seats last minute when I went last month. Eaton Center for shopping. You can get anywhere on the subway and street car system. Sunday is only 7.50 (CD) for all day for up to four people on one pass. I charged almost everything to get the best conversion rate on my credit card.
CN tower gives you a good view of the city.

I was there a couple years ago. Marche was a fun restaurant, with lots of different stations to get food from. I think it was in a mall off of Yonge street. At night we went to a club called Whiskey Saigon that was pretty cool. Also be sure to see what shows are playing.

If you want to check the nightlife visit Queen Street West. Ive been there last summer and it was great fun!
By the way you get the best chicken wings in the Primrose hotel opposite the Maple Leaf Gardens.I tried them once after a Leafs match in 1997 and went back there every time I am in Toronto

Before you go, check out www.torontolife.com. The 25$ gourmet (price for two) is a great guide for inexpensive restaurants.
When you arrive, pick up copies of Now and Eye, they are great for intersting and non-mainstream sites/events.
The Annex and Queen St. are filled with eclectic shops. Both regions are close to the Eaton's Centre.
The Maddison (in the Annex) and C'est What? (St. Lawrence Market) are great, but are more pub type environments vs dance clubs. That being said, they are filled with the 20/30 crowd.

How timely.. was planning a very similar post about a very similar trip; weekend trip to Toronto for me and a friend of mine (low thirty-something guys from NYC.)

I've visited Toronto several times. A trip up in the CN tower is worth doing--I think it is, or was, the tallest structure in the world. You feel like you're in an airplane when you're up there.
If you're into shopping, head for the Eaton center. Lot's o'shops, the Bay Co. (once the Hudson Bay Company) has a nice old-fashioned multi-level store there, with cool food shopping in the basement.
There is good theatre there. I recall a half-price day of show booth across the street from some of the prime theaters. I saw "Phantom" in Pantage's theater there some years back--excellent!
They also have a fine museum there (Royal Ontario Museum?) that has some cool Egyptian artifacts, including mummies.
Toronto is a wonderful city--have a great time!

To provide more information...
The CN tower is still the tallest free-standing structure in the world. FYI...the lower observation lookout is at the 113 story level; the skypod observation level is at the 146 story level. On the lower level you can jump up and down on a glass floor! Kind of cool.
