Before you go, check out
www.torontolife.com. The 25$ gourmet (price for two) is a great guide for inexpensive restaurants.
When you arrive, pick up copies of Now and Eye, they are great for intersting and non-mainstream sites/events.
The Annex and Queen St. are filled with eclectic shops. Both regions are close to the Eaton's Centre.
The Maddison (in the Annex) and C'est What? (St. Lawrence Market) are great, but are more pub type environments vs dance clubs. That being said, they are filled with the 20/30 crowd.
