JNB to DEL

I am a UA *alliance flyer and am looking to go from Johnannesberg to New Deli. OK, I am a bit picky, I don't want to fly on AI or others and really don't want to have to back track to Europe. Suggestions? via BKK or HKG?

Thanks

If UA1kMFR doesn't want to fly the likes of AI, (s)he probably wouldn't care to fly from BOM-DEL via the remaining options, such as IC, 9W, or S2!

Another option is to take SQ JNB-SIN-DEL. That is probably the most direct *A route on a decent carrier. The only downside is a 12-hour layover in SIN. Via BKK, you're looking at three flights, such as SQ/SQ/TG. Note that the TG BKK-DEL flight leaves in the evening (I'm on it tomorrow), which is another layover. The only earlier flights are AI and IC.

Go to http://www.airports.co.za/ and check the weekly/biweekly flights section for international flights from JNB.

I would recommend Emirates via Dubai (non Star Alliance but you can get points on UA?, just not status? points).

SIA (* alliance) has a once a week flight via Mauritius, just not sure (doesn't look like you can) if you can ticket to Mauritius and then get an Indian airline from Mauritius. Air Mauritius flies once weekly directly to Delhi.

The best connection is either SAA via Mumbai or, secondarily, via BKK.

Unfortunately, SQ doesn't have passenger rights from JNB-MRU, so that one's out. If flying the Star Alliance is that important (and I can completely relate), then I think the suggestion to fly to SIN on SQ is the best option. Assuming that you have the time to do this, then go into Singapore for several hours to kill time during the 12 hour layover. LH to FRA is an option, too, but it sounds like you'd prefer not to go to Europe.

There are certainly more direct routes to DEL from JNB, but SQ is the best Star Alliance option given your parameters.
