Unfortunately, SQ doesn't have passenger rights from JNB-MRU, so that one's out. If flying the Star Alliance is that important (and I can completely relate), then I think the suggestion to fly to SIN on SQ is the best option. Assuming that you have the time to do this, then go into Singapore for several hours to kill time during the 12 hour layover. LH to FRA is an option, too, but it sounds like you'd prefer not to go to Europe.

There are certainly more direct routes to DEL from JNB, but SQ is the best Star Alliance option given your parameters.
