Change fee on later flight?

If I have an early flight, and I happen to "miss" my early flight and there is room an later flights, will the airlines charge me a change fee?

You can go stand-by on the later flights w/o paying a fee.

The operative word here is stand-by. If for some reason the later flight is sold out or cancelled, you will not be offered the same "protection" as confirmed passengers (unless you are elite on the airline).

The above is exactly right for every airline I know of EXCEPT Southwest, which does not allow standbys. On Southwest, if you change your flight for any reason, even on the same day, you must upgrade your fare for that flight to their full fare.
