Passenger Rights

Earlier today when I arrived at the Ohara airport I found out that American Airlines had assigned my seat to another passenger. Five of us with full fares who had all arrived half an hour before the flight was scheduled to depart we're informed that our seats were given to passengers who were scheduled on a flight with mechanical problems. We were given $500 vouchers and placed on a later flight. The $500 was a nice gesture but it was not enough. What are my options?
