I untuck the sheets on the bed. I can't sleep with sheets tucked in even if just at the feet.

How do you do this? I'd probably forget to put it back.

I don't think I have any out-of-the-ordinary rituals, but I won't even sit on the bedspread. Now I know why.

I scan the bathroom for cleanliness, look in closet and under bed (and anywhere else) for intruders, put out the Do Not Disturb Sign and lock the door.

For all the people who clean rooms...you were exposed to more germs at the airport in 5 minutes than you will be exposed to in your stay at the hotel. If you want to go all the way

- you better bring your own food for the duration of your stay. Anything prepared at the bar/restaurant is most likely made by someone who has not washed their hands all day

- better disinfect that rental car you drove to the hotel...god only knows what has gone on in the back seat

- make sure you don't shake any hands on your trip

It may seem gross that there are a billion germs on hotel remotes, beds etc. But there are just as many on your computer keyboard, on your desk at work, on any public transportation seats (planes included), and basically anything that hs ever been touched by another human being. Only difference is the local news won't do an "expose" on your computer keyboard during sweeps month but they will do one every year on the hotel bed.
I agree about bacteria, etc. on surgaces, but with the bedbug epidemic in NYC (and a friend had them in a hotel in Wash DC), I will definitely tear apart the bed - too expensive to get rid of if they go home with me.
And I'm definitely in favor of hotels switching to duvets, which get washed (hopefully) between guests (I generally ask housekeeping not to change sheets and towels while I'm there - better from an environmental point of view, and doesn't hurt me).

I always give the bathroom a thorough look. Recently found a half-used bottle of mouthwash in a 5* hotel in HKG. The duty manager came up and was most apologetic, but it still made me go .

After placing my luggage and hanging up my shirts I go to the bathroom and open the soap. I do this because it is a bugger to open up those things when your hands are already wet, especially the ICHotels groups shrink wrapped soaps.

I don't much special. I check the desk and test internet access. If there's a problem, I want to know right away, not when I'm trying to send files to people at 10pm.

Just imagine what will happen when hotel will find out they will start moving you to another room every day...
Seriously, what is the reason to rinse all of them? Quick inspection revealed that at the moment I have 8 glasses, 8 plates and 4 sets of silverware... it never came to my mind to wash/rinse all of them (maximum 1 set per person)... even if I have washing machine in room.
Moreover, what rinse will do to the dirt/bacterias? if one is seriously concerned with this, one shall wash, not rinse... not to forget washing coffee machine, fridge and microwave.

LOL. My brother actually travels with a small pipe wrench. The very first thing he does when he checks into any hotel is takes off the shower head, removes the flow restrictor, uses some plumbing tape to set the threads, and reattaches the shower head. Not only does HE have a great shower, but he is leaving his mark for travellers to come.

People, if you have not done this to your HOME SHOWER, take off the shower head.... look for a little plastic type washer with a small hole for the water to pass through (or 2-3 small holes). Pry it out with a screw driver. You will not believe the difference.

And I thought I was the only one who did this.
