I've been called a lot of things, but never EASTWIND.
I am not sure that I share your confidence in the safety of the US with regards to ICBM attacks, nevertheless the Airborne Laser System that I refer to isn't really designed to protect against such attacks.
It is designed to provide a shield in regional conflicts for US troops/bases and their allies.
Missiles (of all ranges) are a way for militaries that are otherwise FAR behind in ability to wage war to narrow the gap. (China would be a PERFECT example. A third world military by virtually any standard except for their missiles carrying nuclear warheads.) The ABL will enable the US to neutralize these threats in regional conflicts and protect US interests.
A fine (and acheiveable) goal indeed.
Now how this relates to Lufthansa? I don't know.
