Best aircraft?
General poll here, which jet is your favorite? Favorite meaning comfort (smoothness of the ride) and safety concerns.
I myself like MD-80s alot, not because of leg room, because different airlines have different seating arrangements, but their smoothness when they take off.
Will be glad to hear from y'all.

Of the commercial aircraft currently flying passengers in regular service my favorite is, without question, the 747-400. For me there is nothing more magnificent in the skies - the power and stability; the ride; the elegant, stately cruise - truly an impressive aircraft.
Having said that, I still am quite fond of the L-1011 and DC-10 (as well as MD-11) and have wonderful memories of the 707, DC-8 and 880. Also have to say how much I love those occasions on a 757 when full power is used on takeoff.

ah, yes, the L1011 is (was) a wonderful aircraft.
And the 744 is magnifique, you can't get much better.
Then there is the 777...ah, I like that plane a lot.
And then there's the A330...
so many nice aircraft.
My vote though is the 744 with the 777 a notch below

I'm with Richard.
744 for the shear size, although the silhouette looks a little old to me now, the high ceilings.
777 for the sobriety of the lines, the massive engines, the sense of contained power.
and a special mention to the A3XX, which, although yet unborn, is really a pioneer in the design and for better or worse, in the way we'll experience air travel.

I always miss 727. This is a very extraordinary plane to me.
3 jet engines is always more welcoming that 2. Classic lifted tail (due to the engine position), and what I miss most, is the build-in stair way at the back of the plane. This is most useful in small airports.
Because all three engines are attached to the body rather than the wings, it tend to be a little noisy at the back.

As a huge plane buff, I love these threads. I also agree with the 747 for the best widebody. Unfortunately, I seldom get the opportunity to fly on them. Since I have never flown to Asia and don't fly United often I have only been on 1 200 and 2 300s. 777 is a close 2nd. For narrowbodies my favorite is the 757 with the 727 as my 2nd choice. The question I have always wondered was why I like the 757/727 so much more than the 737 when the fuselage is the exact same??? You can tell I am a fan of Boeing over Airbus but I do have to admit the A330/40 is pretty cool. My honorable mention is the L1011. I have flown Delta three time this year just to ride it before they are retired. In fact, I am going to Atlanta next month with a Tristar on both legs of the trip for a total of 5 trips on the L1011 this year. With regard of the MD80, I am a big fan of the DC-9 family in general. I believe it gets a bum rap. On the regional jets/props I have far less experience. I have only flown on ERJs and CRJs and take the Embraer over the Bombardier by a mile. Has anyone taken a Fairchild/Dornier 328 yet? For props, my favorite would be the Dash 8. Keep in mind, the only others I have been on have been Saab 340s, Beech 1900s, Fokker 27s, and a Short 360. Planes that I wish I could have flown on would include the Constellation and the Caravelle.

I agree with afang about the MD-80 smooth takeoff. Just had one the other day that caught my attention. I like 767s as spacious planes. Never been on 777 or 747, but I enjoy watching them from outside (though the 742s pale before the 744s).

I'll second Empress's recommendation of the DC-10. Fortunate enough only to have sat in the front cabin of CP's DC-10 fleet (middle 2 seats in the last row being the best).
Second best is 767s in the front cabin (CP with the A seat being window and aisle).
Been in top of 747-400s and -200s, front of -200s, -300s, 777s, L1011s, A-340s, A-330s for wide bodies and 757s, 707s, 727s, 737s, DC-8s, DC-9s, MD-80s, MD-90s, Tridents, BA1-11s, but the DC-10 and 767s remain my two favourites.
