Arizona

After pondering my options for a trip this thanksgiving the thought of going to Arizona and the grand canyon crossed my head. I have never been there and was wondering what things there were to do/see on the way from Phoenix to the crater. My travel agent suggested going to Sedona for a night or two. Is that worthwhile? In additon this trip would entail my first flights on America West. Since nothing is set in stone at this point and comments about the Airlines service.comofrt in both classes when compared to UA/DL/NW would be most helpful. Thank you all very much in advance.

CTANK,

Arizona is a beautiful state for a vacation, with desert in the southern part, and green mountains in the north.
This time of year will be pleasant in Phoenix, but quite cool in the northern part of the state.
If you're driving north from Phoenix on I-17, be sure to visit the ruins at Indian Wells and several other spots along the way. Sedona is a must stop along the way, overnight there, if you can--great red rock mountain scenery. Say hello to Snoopy Mountain for me.
Definately try to get to the Grand Canyon, a must see--but at this time of year it may be very chilly, dress appropriately. We had light snow there on an April visit many years
ago, and last year, when we visited the Canyon the first week in May, got caught in a bliizzard with whiteout conditions on I-40 from LV to Arizona, just outside of Williams.
Stayed in Flagstaff, at a very comfortable Hampton Inn and Suites about one block north of the intersection of I-40 and I-17, about two hours easy drive from the Canyon.
Definately see Sedona, and the Grand Canyon--well worth the trip, but expect very cool, changeable weather around Thanksgiving.

Have a good trip.

bj-21.

I've visited Arizona several times. My favorite place is Sedona; big enough to have a selection of inns/B&Bs and restauarants but small enough to retain that small town, "frontier" feel. I've stayed at the Southwest B&B/Inn at the south end of town; large, modern rooms with fireplace, pool and whirlpool and breakfast served in a sunny, glass enclosed common dining room. Many good and reseaonable restaurants in town.

The best part about Sedona are the orange, red and rust colors on display of the canyons and mountains at sunset, which surround the town. Magical! Then the air has that cinnamon/spruce scent that's so characteristic of the Southwest. And seeing the stars which are more visible than in a bright city contribute to Sedona's beauty. My visit was in February, so it was chilly but definitely pleasant enough for taking hikes.
