A Trip on the Concorde

I will have enough Marriott Reward points this fall to get a free trip on the Concorde (or use the points for another purpose).

My question is for those who have flown on the Concorde - is the trip that spectacular that it would be worthwhile to use 2 years of Marriott points for a round trip Concorde trip?

Hi,

First, I think the MC Reward is for eastbound on the BA Concorde, return to any BA US gateway in economy.

I used this reward in 1996 for my Concorde flight, I think that anyone who has the chance to do it should, exactly for the experience (and it is neither perfection nor life-changing). What it IS, however, in this ever-homogonized world, is that it is a truly UNIQUE experience, one that few of your contemporaries are likely to share.

With each passing day we get closer to the retirement of these majestic aircraft. Who can tell when the the next generation of supersonic commercial airplanes will become a reality? I say 'go for it' while you have a chance!

(And as a conversation starter, the certificate of flight that I have hanging on my office wall gets LOTS of comments)!

You may also want to use the 'search' function, as I'm sure your question has been broached before.

Good luck.

Thanks for your comments Non-NonRev. I used the search feature and I didn't come up with the answers I needed.

The Concorde trip is extremely hard to justify to myself and family as I am on the road far to much already. As a former commerical pilot I really want to have a trip on this plane before it retires, but first I have to "sell my family" on it.

I hate to say this, but unless somebody can give me some ammunition to justify the trip, my Marriott points will pay for weekend family trips - so sad

Back seat, I was thinking of doing the same thing with my 200,000 Marriott points. But the thought of flying back in coach (even on BA--gives me pause for thought). I know there are other programs that have you fly the Concorde one way, and business clas the return. Perhaps you can trade in your Marriott points for another program to enable you to do this (I am looking into it).

This may be moot with BA's latest announcement suspending Concorde flights.

WORD NOW THAT BA WILL ALSO SUSPEND ALL CONCORDE FLIGHTS.

British and French governments have decided to REVOKE certification!

The morning flight from London to NY was canceled, as well as the later return flight from NY.

As posted here 2 weeks ago I had this little baby waitlisted for a double cabin for August 20 arrival at Sheraton Skyline, Heathrow.

Concorde, QEII and Orient Express, all for 1495. Darn!

May she fly again.

All FTs should experience supersonic flying!

About twelve years ago I was in Europe with a BA return Y ticket with noon departure back to the States. Two days prior, I was able to arrange a long sought MAJOR potential customer appointment for the afternoon. But I simply had to be in NYC the following morning.

Needless to say I "justified" (without any problems) trading in the ticket for the 6PM Concorde flight. It was a long time ago; but I don't believe there were later regular flights. In any case, I did it!

I am sure it cost me less than $1K for the difference. In those days Y was not discounted and the Concorde was nothing like as expensive as today.

I too have the Certificate; but long ago my "ego wall" was never replaced after an office move. The paper luggage tags wore out. But I still fondly remember arriving home in Manhattan before I departed London.

I have been flying extensively on business and pleasure, both domestic and international, for over 50 years; and I take a degree of pride in having flown on every civilian aircraft since WWII (with the exception of the Comet) - even two USSR aircraft which I would prefer to forget.

I hate to see the Concorde grounded. It is a truely magnificent bird. I hope it gets back in the air so that all the FT brethren get a least a possible chance to go supersonic.
