Chances of being searched or not by US Customs? Black or white? Male or female?
US Customs officials ordered black American women returning home from overseas to remove their clothes or undergo X-rays much more often than other passengers, even though their searches were less likely to reveal illegal hidden drugs, a report says.
Only a fraction of 1 percent of the 71.5 million passengers were singled out for searches as they entered the United States on international flights in fiscal year 1998. And the vast majority of those 52,455 passengers were subjected to simple pat-downs, according to the report by the General Accounting Office.

Border Patrol agents may not consider a driver's Hispanic appearance when deciding whether to stop someone for suspected smuggling or illegal entry, a federal appeals court has ruled. Because Hispanics make up a large and growing part of the population, ethnicity is irrelevant in deciding whether there is reasonable suspicion to stop them, the 9th US. Circuit Court of Appeals said in issuing its 7-4 ruling Tuesday.
"Stops based on race or ethnic appearance send the underlying message to all our citizens that those who are not white are judged by the color of their skin alone ... that they are in effect assumed to be potential criminals first and individuals second," Judge Stephen Reinhardt said.

Perhaps it's just my 'honest' face, but I've never even had a customs agent ask me any questions, nor stop me in any way. I've made 7 overseas trips in the past year and have just handed over my customs form and been waved on my way! It could be that I only take a small carry on and they must figure I couldn't be concealing anything in there--or the fact that my total dollars spent never exceeds $100.00.
