October is THE most expensive time to visit Boston (at least the first half of the month) because of fall foliage. Hotel rooms will be at a premium and room rates will be at their highest.
That being said, I highly recommend using Priceline.com for hotels. In fact, I know of three different people who've used Priceline for hotels in Boston recently. All were very satisfied with what they got.
If you go to their website, you will be able to choose the area of the city and what quality of hotel. You may want to start by bidding on a 3 star hotel for around $100 per night, and if your bid is not accepted, then re-bid on a 2 star hotel.
Two weeks ago, I started a "Club" on Yahoo to share winning bids from priceline.com for both hotels and airfares. Please feel free to stop by http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/pricelinedeals for any questions or comments about Priceline, and if you decide to use them, I hope you will share your winning bid.
Just FYI, I know of someone who successfully bid $80 for a 3 star hotel in downtown Boston for late August. He got the Swissotel. I think that bid may be too aggressive during October, however, because of fall foliage.
Good luck.

Scoop,
I live in Boston, and I've been trying to find reasonable rates for some friends of mine coming up in October. Good luck. Rates I've found range from $200-400 per night. Oh, well. :-(
If you don't need to stay in the city, though, you may have better luck. Try checking into hotels in suburbs north of Boston and convenient to the MBTA Commuter Rail. These trains are not that expensive and will take you right into North Station, which for a Bruins game, is conveniently located INSIDE the Fleet Center.
You can check the MBTA Commuter Rail map and schedule for the names of stops to use whilst enquiring for hotels. Goto http://www.mbta.com for more information.
Best of luck to you!! GO BRUINS!! 8-P

There are several bed and breakfasts in the South End you could find for $100-$150.
Try this site: www.boston4less.com
As for The Good Life, I'm not a big fan of the red neon lights and the dive-ish atmosphere, but the martinis and the availability of Vodka Stolis are good.

Are you staying over a weekend? Rates at the Sheratons and Marriotts can get to as low as $180 on weekend nights. However, as noted above, Boston is probably the most expensive city for hotel rooms in the nation - after NYC.

I stayed at the Hilton at Dedham Place outside Boston for under $100. The hotel is convenient to the commuter rail/subway. Nice hotel, the distance isn't bad if you take the train.

If you want to sound like a townie at the game, the battle cry is "Go Broooonz!"
If your only purpose in Boston proper is the game, I'd recommend a stay west of Boston. Ride the MBTA (subway) Green Line. If your train doesn't take you to North Station (I believe many stop at Government Center) it is no problem getting to North Station, on another train across the platform.
