shadow: I stayed there a few years back. It's not too bad, your basic Sheraton. If I remember correctly, your choices in the neighborhood are the Sheraton and a Hilton, probably comparable. It's about 15-20 minutes south of EWR. There's a train stattion nearby that takes you into Penn Station in about an hour.

If you like Indian food, which I do, don't miss "Indian Street" - a two-three block chock full of Indian restaurants and stores. I had dinner at a wonderful South Indian place called Udupi. I forget the name of the street; they should be able to tell you at the hotel. It's about a 5-10 minute drive from the Sheraton.

Hope this helps!

dgolds:thanks, I'm not a fan of Indian food, so I'll probably pass on those. I've got some plans in the city, so I won't have too much problem having a choice of good spots. My meeting in Brooklyn cancelled, so no chance to go to Peter Luger's or the River Cafe.
Hoping to have a chance to meet with Catman.

BTW-let me know if you've got time in PDX to meet for a brew...essxjay said she would like to join us also.

As a somewhat frequent visitor to the area, I strongly recommend the Sheraton over the Hilton (Woodbridge). The Hilton has an excellent lobby but the main hallways and rooms are very well worn - less than acceptable in my opinion. In fact, I would put this Hilton near the bottom of my list of all Hilton's I've ever stayed at. It is badly in need of renovation. The Sheraton is nothing great, mind you, but it is a step up. If you really want something better, stay at the Marriott in Somerset, the Hyatt in New Brunswick, or the Hilton in East Brunswick. All are much farther (south) than the Hilton or Sheraton but are better hotels.

shadow: Thanks for the offer. I'll be pretty tied up with family this short trip. Sorry I won't be able to make it this time around. I do get up to PDX every so often, it would be fun to meet you and essxjay.

thanks MileKing & dgolds, I got the same report from a friend in NJ. I would also prefer the Hyatt or Marriott. The Sheraton location is great for my trip as a base, since I'll be working in South/Central NJ and NYC. The other hotels are just a bit too off track. Thanks again...

If you must stay there in the immediate area, the Sheraton, as noted, is a litte better choice. There is also a Clarion in Edison which is pretty good and notably a good value. The train station alluded to is Metro Park and it can take you straight to Manhattan's Penn Station easily. Another good choice if you want to have access to Manhattan and Edison both via rental car and can pay a liitle more - the Short Hills Hilton hotel. It is about ten miles north of the Shearton Edison and it is the best hotel in the area by far!

If you'll be around NYC on the weekend of 8/14, Robert Cray is doing a free summerstage concert that Sunday in Central Park! It's at Rumsey Playfield (72nd). It will be a treat for sure!

thanks for your input, doc. I looked hard at the Short Hills Hilton, but easy access to the Turnpike swayed me to the Sheraton. Also, since I haven't used Starwood much this year (mostly Hyatt & Marriott) this stay puts me over for the Free Fridays promo. I've already booked a free night at the Westin in SEA for the F-T meeting in Sept.

You won't be at a loss for restaurants (the fast food/ chain kind) in this area. The Sheraton is across the street (Rt 1) from a big shopping center, Woodbridge Center and just north of the Menlo Park Mall. Also there are tons of chain restaurants within 2 minutes of the hotel along Rt 1). The train station, Metro Park would be your best bet for getting into the city--its a 5 minute drive from your hotel and there is plenty of parking. You mentioned its closeness to the NJ turnpike, well you are at the crossroad of both the turnpike (exit 11) & the Garden State Parkway, so if you have the time you can get down to the "Shore". Have fun!

thanks, mauld...I lived in South Jersey for 4 years before moving to PDX. Spent more time in PHL & Atlantic City/Brigantine than north.
I've got friends in the Rutgers/Edison area, so I'm sure we'll have stuff to do after work. Maybe I can arrange a meeting with Catman & NJDavid while I'm there. I'm going down to PHL on 8/23 for the Dock St. Brewery get-together.
