I am sure I read in one of the many flyer forums I read that airlines, specifically AA, often charges more per seat if you are booking one passenger as opposed to 2 passengers. I just verified this and it is real! Is there a work around this totally unfair pricing structure...like book 2 seats and cancel one later? This is crazy!

AA charges you more per person on some flights/routings when you're a single flying compared to when you're booking for two persons.
Reason behind is that they think you're travelling for business when you travel alone.
