Late boarding due to short connection. Boarding still in progress. Opened the overhead and see 2 grocery bags with sandwiches and a coffee cup and fountain soda sitting free. Can't make this stuff up. Lady in aisle seat angry when I point out this can be.

I'm always amazed at some of the stuff people carry aboard. Kids, mostly. Giant stuffed animals, toys, guitars... Must be nice to travel for Spring Break and carry on board a roller bag, a backpack and a guitar!

...took control of the seats in economy once... I stood up and said.."everyone, you can move to any seat when the seatbelt light goes off.. so get comfy"...
...the people who wouldn't move were squished in the window and middle seat and I said to them lightheartedly..."I bet you are sorry now you didn't move"!

+1. The world is filled with officious busy bodies who seek every opportunity to redress being passed over for hall monitor in grade school. My advice to them is not to start telling me what to do and keep your hands off my stuff.

Two things. One, if you are a passenger and not a uniformed member of the actual flight crew, do not tell me where to sit. Not to be rude, and I am sure you fly a lot, but I will ignore you at best. If you were to (even jokingly) tell me that I should have moved when you made your announcement, I will respond with a very limited level of humor.
When it comes to moving my carryon without permission from me, consider this. What if you're moving something I own, maybe a computer or valuable piece of medical equipment which can not be easily replaced, I expect you to do so with my express permission. In fact, I would respond much better to the phrase "Can you move your bag" if the phrases "Excuse me" and "Please" are used. In fact, "Would you mind helping me squeeze my bag in, as yours is kind of in the way, but we can both fit if we move things around a bit, please" would work better than deciding that my suitcase is in the way of your bag, and that you should move my bag as it is your desire.

No, but if you see someone digging around in that bin, especially someone who isn't seated in your row, you can be alert to the situation. There's never anything in my carry-on that's worth stealing, or that I can't live without, so I never worry about it. But, if yours is stuffed with expensive jewels, you may feel safer having in under the seat or, as mentioned by a previous poster, in the bin across the aisle.
