Unless you have OP's friend buy a refundable ticket in his name just to pass security and then board with the throw away segment.

Forget about the second part for a minute, the first part carries risk. The airline's obligation is to get you from PIT to MIA. If PIT-ORD is delayed or canceled, they are well within their rights to direct you through another airport or on a direct flight.
