Hotels Blocking Internet Content

So, I've navigated to about 3 websites at my current hotel and got "inappropriate content" in response. Nothing really inappropriate, either.

However: Why would a hotel get into the business of deciding what websites are appropriate and which ones aren't?

Have you called and asked the nice people at the front desk? Maybe they can put you in touch with their IT technician.

Is it the hotel?

Some countries (ME) block whole swathes of sites.

The hotel almost certainly wouldn't, their ISP or IT support service would provide a content filter who may well use a blocked website/IP list received from elsewhere.

We all want to know what websites you're trying to bring up...

Where are you? I know that what you're describing is fairly common in Asia. The Thai government blocks lots of sites.

8 or 9 years ago I was in an airport lounge that blocked Flyer Talk as inappropriate.

Never seen it since.

Where is the OP and what are the websites? Also, is this your own laptop in your room or a business center computer? If the latter are commonly used by kids without supervision, the hotel might block anything that isn't considered to be family friendly.

The Hilton Garden Inn in Shuri Castle OKA was the worst at this... couldn't load many simple https sites or apps. Frustrating doesn't begin to describe it.

A couple of CX lounges used to block FT around that time as well. It made me wonder about some parts of the site that I hadn't visited yet.

I for one am not going to pay to be censored by some nanny-hotel corporation.

It's no different from them telling me what conversations I am allowed to have on the phone.

I am in a Country Inn and Suites in Lehighton, PA. It's my own laptop. Mom's in the ICU and this is one of the two hotels (the other is a Hampton, and their Internet quality is terrible) in town.

I'm annoyed, but I can use my phone as a hotspot if needed.

I think what's worse than the filtering is the almost hourly confirmation screen and the loss of my Internet connection till I agree AGAIN with their terms.
