How far do you go to redeem first-class awards?

(mods, if this isn't the right forum please move)

How far does one go to get a "free" ticket?
Obviously, most first-class awards aren't entirely free in terms of cash, usually in the hundreds to even a thousand for British, but sometimes you need positioning flights. I have gone to Europe to position myself for an award, even though I live in America. I guess I still saved money, over the cost of actually buying the first-class ticket.

What's the most someone has done to get an award ticket?

I don't really have an answer to this.

However, after seeing your name "s0ssos", it sounded Greek to me and reminded me of the palace complex at Knossos. Have you ever been?

Nope.

I wish there were a forum to discuss awards. Lots of blogs on it, no place on FT though

s0ssos, the key reason that you don't see a lot of discussion forums for your specific question is that the effort to get an airline or alliance award is typically discussed in the specific airline forum or air alliance forum under or through which airline program the award is issued.

I would not go further than approximately 12,500 miles to redeem an award.

Before some of rules were tightened up in terms of routing for a single award, flew to Oceania via Europe, China/HK and South America to sit in the front. In those days, you could make each stop a mini vacation. We're based in ORD.
