Well, a Japanese guy comes and sits two rows behind us. Then he went and and grabbed some rice crackers.

And then he started eating them...

Boy I wanted to check if it was Michael Winslow sitting somewhere nearby, because honestly, I can't made SUCH loud eating sounds even if I try to do it on purpose.

We had to move and and I swear, I could hear him from the distance of 10m. So we moved a little bit farther.

I've been in Japan number of times and do know that there are things which are acceptable in Japanese culture, when in a Western society one would be shown towards door (and obviously other way around).

I do hope that he is not going to be on the same flight...

I'm pretty sure the title of this thread should have been "loud eating comes to the seat near me"

Was he basically eating some very crunchy crackers with his mouth open? I think in cases like that, it's a valid request to the flight attendant to ask the offending party to lower the volume, as it is a disturbance. If it continues, headphones or ear plugs can work wonders.

I've never understood the loud slurping that seems to accompany many Asian eaters. It is gross.

Different culture. I also try not to be offended as people talk with food in their mouth. I do find it a little strange that the same person carrying on a conversation with food in their mouth will cover his/her mouth when laughing (without food).

I can't stand hearing people eat crunchy food. It drives me insane.

Try eating louder than uncle Japa and see if he gets the message. I did that to Vietnamese friends eating pho.

I have no problem at all asking the person to tone it done. I always ask politely. The first time.

I hate loud eaters and loud breathers! I hate hearing the air whistle through someone's nose! Eek.

And what do you do the second time?

Tut loudly?

Or go running to the lounge agent?

This is public transport which has people from many cultures, you've just got to go with the flow....

Loud chewing and talking with your mouth full have always grossed me out, but I would not be able to ask the person to tone it down. But lots of bad words would be going through my mind.

Apparently, I really hate it because when my son was around 6 and had his friend over, he leaned over to his friend and reminded him to "chew with his mouth closed"...lol

I'm convinced that I have Misophonia as chewing really really drives me nuts.

This whole thing makes me chuckle.

I find eating period to be kinda gross. It's odd to me to sit across from someone, stare them directly in the face and watch them eat. Closer in is worse too.

The cultural norms are always interesting though, it's widely known that hocking (sp?) up, spitting and slurping are accepted as normal in China (forgive me if THAT part is a generalization, I'm not sure if it's regional). But you kinda just have to accept it and keep it to yourself I think.

If it's your family, or a close friend, maybe you mention it, anyone else and it's basically out of bounds unless they ask for a lesson in the matter.

When it's not a cultural norm, you still can't really say anything diplomatically imo. There's one particular lady in my life, VERY attractive...but I can't eat with her. It's awful lol. She's a mouth open eater and somewhat of a lip smacker too, it's too much. But I can't say anything, even in my head I get angry when I play it out haha.

The other thing is, once you notice it, you can't escape it and you overblow it. I would bet this guy wasn't as loud as the OP said, but you notice it, then it amplifies. Just like if you're already having a bad day, then this guy comes over, you might flip your lid even though it's something really insignificant.

I've never heard of Misophonia but I wonder if there's something else close, I CAN'T stand the sound of Styrofoam, it sends chills down my spine, coolers, packaging, it's all bad.

I think misophonia can be any noise...for me, though, it's chewing. I guess that's why I like a little bit of noise in a restaurant.

You could try asking the offender to stop breathing.
