I've done it. And I'll do it again. Had FA backing when I did it. Once a guy in Coach came running up screaming at me for it. FA walked him back to Coach *with* his bag.

If you want First Class perks, buy First Class.

+1

At least have the courtesy towards your fellow passenger of notifying the FA and letting them deal with it. 'Excuse me, this bag above my seat belongs to a passenger seated 30 rows back, is there any chance I could store my bag here instead?" Perhaps the bag gets moved or checked, but more likely (as Tchiowa experiences' above suggest) the FA handles the situation and either way the other person would know what had happened to their belongings. I would guess your exposing yourself to some form of liability when you start messing with someone else's property - whether you feel it was placed incorrectly or not.

And I think it would be more humiliating to the person smugly sitting in the back while a FA walks down the isle attempting to find the owner... is this yours? Only to set it down in front of him and remind him that the 1st class bin is only for 1st class passengers.

I would never leave my bag in another cabin class (did leave own down in C when I was travelling "carry-on heavy" once in 747-F) but if someone had touched my bag and damaged its fragile contents, I would use every means at my disposal to recoup the damages. Don't touch other people's property. It's one of those things you should have learned in kindergarten.

And I've had DYKWIA jokers try to pull my stuff out of the F bin over my F seat and the FA sent their late boarding lounge sitting butts back to Y carrying their late boarding lounge sitting extra bags with them, or insist they gate check them.

If you want bin space, board on time.;)

Safe travels,

FC amenities is for FC passengers. While I would have approached the FA about bags in my overhead I would agree with the general sentiment.

Thank you! :)

It was either that... or have my own carry-on gate-checked. The FA did ask me if that was my own bag... I said I had not idea whose bag it was. (which was the truth)

The answer to this question depends on whether the bag was compliant with the airline's carry-on size regulations. Depending on the aircraft model, you can't necessarily assume that any bag that is compliant will fit in the overhead bins the right way.

Regarding putting bags in the wrong cabin, it is not at all uncommon for FAs to tell economy passengers to put their bags up front if space in the back is full and all premium passengers have boarded. It would never be appropriate to move anyone's bag yourself. If you have a problem, notify the staff. As everyone knows from the news, little disputes have a way of escalating rapidly on airplanes.

It's also not at all uncommon for Y passengers to take it on themselves to load up the F space with their bags and flounce on down the back while there is still plenty of bin space in their own cabin. I don't think anyone objects to the scenario that you have presented, but that's not the issue here.

Yes, but how would one distinguish between the scenarios? An F passenger who feels that a Y passenger has taken his/her space has no way of knowing the back story, and therefore cannot do anything without consulting staff.

I've seen both scenarios, it's not hard to tell the difference.

I guess I'm guilty of being "sneaky" as well.

I was in first class on a 757 a couple of weeks ago. I didn't board early because I arrived at the airport very late. By the time I boarded, the overhead bins were all full. My seatmate told me that one of the large carry-on bags belongs to some guy back in coach who just stuffed it in there. I pulled it out and told the FA that I wanted it gate-checked. I then put my own carry-on in the overhead.

I have done similar. Except I pointed out the guy down back and the FA took it to them. Don't have a problem with that in the slightest.

Agreed. Someone pulled that with my bag once -- except that the bag wasn't oversized. It just didn't fit once the other passenger had turned it to make space for his bag. They ended up moving my little roller up to the front of the plane, leaving me to spend the flight wondering if anyone was rifling through it.

Lesson learned: Watch your carry-on like a hawk until everyone's on board and the overhead lockers are all closed up.

Agreed. The first guy was in the wrong, in my opinion. Put your bag in the right way and it benefits everyone. Do it wrong and take your chances.

That's a bit dickish imo, but I would say that you could've asked the FA "are any of these from Economy?" if she says yes, you ask for things to be reshuffled, if she says no then you tell her what the seatmate said. On AC usually the J space is held until fully boarded, then if the FAs need it they'll stuff some other stuff up there.

IMO, that's not "a bit dickish", that's totally dickish. I think it's fine for one to ask the FA to rearrange things if they aren't put in the overhead correctly, but it's totally unacceptable to take matters in your own hands and have someone else's bag checked. Especially all based on ANOTHER passenger's statement or speculation.
