Why do you put your smaller bag in the overhead bin?

I always put my computer bag in the seat in front of me (coach or first).

Just curious why some put your smaller bag in the overhead compartment.

I don't see that many folks doing that - veteran flyers realize that FA's often remove them (as well as jackets) when space gets tight, so they wait to see if there's room after most everyone has boarded.

Why do people:
- put bags in sideways when they will fit the other way and take-up 1/2 the space?
- spread out roll-aboard, small bag, lunch bag, jacket, scarf in the overhead such that they take the space of 3 roll-aboards?
- expect Row 32 to be at the front of the plane (as they search aimlessly for their row #)?
- think that seats A through K are assigned randomly across each row?
- not get their STUFF organized BEFORE they get on the plane, instead of spending 10 minutes re-arranging their belongings during boarding?
- rush the gate when only pre-boarding has been called (can't read boarding pass, can't read the priority/regular gate queue signs, have never been on a plane before???)

Why does the safety video state that "SMALL" items are to go in the overhead and "LARGER" items under the seat in front of you?

These are all unanswerable mysteries.

If I have one bag (which I often do- a backpack that doubles as computer bag/weekend bag, and that could fit in both the overhead compartment and under a seat), I'd like my legroom, please...

^ I check my roll aboard since I have to check my separate tool bag too, that leaves me with my backpack that has all my electronics. So, since I too like the leg (more importantly for me, is the knee room to stretch my legs out of the 90 degree position) I put my backpack up in overhead, but I tilt it sideways to take up the least amount of room possible.

Because I'm either in Row 1 or Row 6, not by choice.

Cheers,

Why do I? Well, if I'm in row 1 or 6, I have to except on the new planes (as mentioned above). The other time I will do it is if I wasn't upgraded and I am not in rows 6, 16, or 17. Why? Because I'm tall. And those seats are crammed together so tight that I need to be able to run my feet under the seat in front of me just to fit - something I can't do if my laptop bag is down there.

I have been singled out at least 3 times by AA and AS for my rolly bag being "too fat" even though the expansion wasn't even opened in it. So, I have to take stuff out of my bag into my purse. I then see someone juggling 3 carryons (rolly, laptop bag, purse), food, coffee, etc. breeze past and use the overhead bin for all their crap.

I don't have a problem abiding by the rules, but gate agents do a pretty crappy job as a whole regulating carry on luggage (and boarding groups for that matter). That said, I see most people put the smaller bag under their seat. I only see a few idiots put coats up in the bin and those are usually squished around as more people board. In a karma sort of fashion...

/end rant

Seems like there is an underlying theme here if you're getting stopped multiple times.

Maybe a new bag is in order so that you don't give them the ammunition to stop you.

for me I try to get row 6 in coach and its just out of sheer habit to throw everything up in the bin Since the 734s and 732s had bulkheads

that one really makes me scratch my head and it happens EVERY flight multiple times. I guess they think the numbers are row 1, 2, 32, 3, 4, 15, 17, 27, 6 like some sort of lottery draw.

^ You forgot the ones that are in the earlier boarding, sitting towards the back, but put their large roll aboard up above row 6 when there is still plenty of room in the back.... sigh

Because my big fat ... needs that room under the seat in front of me for my legs. And no lady, you cannot put your extra purse/small dog/child in that space just because I'm not using it.

My carry-ons are two computer size bags. One goes under the seat and one goes in the overhead. If I put both my computer size bags in the overhead (stacked), it still takes up less space than if I put a rollaboard up there.
