I was surprised how far out they expand :o (below the tray table)

I understand the legroom excuse for taller people but I see a lot of people who aren't that tall (under 6', sometimes well under) that put their smaller carry on bags up top. My guess is they just aren't thinking. It's the carry-on storage area. That's where our carry-ons go.

The other side would be a bit darker - they just don't care. I've no doubt there're plenty of those types as well. Most of us just don't feel comfortable acknowledging that. I will. I've watched people put everything from purses to computer bags up top within seconds of the flight attendants having implored people over the PA to please not do so. Thoughtless oafs. I've also seen more than a few instances where people sat towards the rear of the plane will place their bags in the bins toward the front of the cabin simply because they don't want to haul them all the way back to their seat during boarding or disembarking. Those who behave in this fashion really need to be a little more thoughtful and considerate of their fellow flyers. Unfortunately, I suspect a fair number of them are by nature more about their own comfort than that of the group as a whole, despite our reticence to acknowledge it because there might be another reason.

I understand where the OP is coming from. This day and age, it seems kinda goofy for someone to put a small purse or bag holding their magazines up there when it can easily fit under the seat in front of you. Sometimes the bin looks like a teenagers sock drawer.

Because I'm tall. And those seats are crammed together so tight that I need to be able to run my feet under the seat in front of me just to fit - something I can't do if my laptop bag is down there.

No offense intended to short people, but I think most short people don't understand how uncomfortable Y is for a tall person with either the seat in front reclined or a bag underneath the seat (or, worse, both).

Totally agree. I think it is probably 40% not thinking - just put it somewhere, stress of boarding for infrequent flyers, etc. 60% I think is purely selfishness and lack of respect. I have only seen this happen one time, but during boarding on one flight, an FA made her way back and forth, re-positioning rollerboards, and handing back items to people that were not appropriate for the overhead bin (inviting them to replace the items after boarding was finished if there was still space). I think the announcements are necessary, but people generally only respond to consequences. I think this type of active management may well be best.

I will say that on at least 2 occasions I've had flight attendants compliment me on my efficient use of space in the bin ;)

My personal favorite is when someone lays a jacket out along the length of a bin to prevent it getting wrinkled...or puts a hat in the dead center of the bin...and then said person freaks out when anyone opens the bin looking for space warning them not to crush their item. I'm always tempted to just put my rollerboard on top!

I'm not just tempted.

It gets moved by the offender, or it gets moved by me.;)

I'm about 5'6", so I'm generally lifting my rollaboard over my head to put it in the bin, and would have to stand on tiptoe to see the back of the overhead bin. After one flight in F, the guy in the row in front of me began frantically searching through the overhead. Turns out he bought an expensive straw hat and put it in the back of the overhead bin, and I had crushed it with my rollaboard, not even seeing it. He was complaining that, "someone crushed my hat!" and I couldn't even bring myself to apologize. As far as I was concerned, he had crushed his hat. Idiot. <shrug>

At a shade over 6'3" and being mostly leg, I literally cannot accommodate both my legs and a carry-on with less than 34" of pitch. If I'm in the exit row or F, the laptop goes underneath the seat, if not, it's going up.

Insofar as offending short people, why not? It's not like they have feelings, anyhow... :D

If this was on a Tucson flight, then you heartlessly murdered my brand new Borsalino panama hat. And I didn't leave it willy-nilly in the bin, it was safely perched on top of my backpack when I put it up. If you're too inconsiderate to look before jamming your bag in the overhead bin, then .... grrr. And if you murdered some other poor traveler's hat, then AS needs to deal with the epidemic of hat murder (and/or mount a hat rack in the coat closet).

You put your hat up there it's your risk.

I know sometimes you dont have a choice if you are in bulkhead but you can wait until the end of boarding to put it up or crew would have found a safe place.

Why do you put your smaller bag in the overhead bin?

I have a Dell XPS 18 (18" tablet) that barely fits beneath the seat in front of me. So I am pretty much forced to stand in line 15-20 minutes prior to boarding so that I can beat everyone else on board. I check my other bag, so I don't feel bad about taking up the space of an oversized laptop bag in the overhead and keeping my legroom free (I'm 6'2"). Since it needs to lie flat, I usually will stuff my jacket on top of it to keep others from placing their bags on top of it.

Seems like there is an underlying theme here if you're getting stopped multiple times.

Maybe a new bag is in order so that you don't give them the ammunition to stop you.

I'm not missing a theme when a) my bag easily fits in the bins, b) I have called the gate agent out for singling me out and their response is "we do the best we can" or "we can't stop everyone", and c) I follow the rules on number of carryons and size of my bag, they just eyeball what they are seeing. I have seen others singled out as well.

I think you missed my point of inconsistency among gate agents enforcing rules on all passengers.

Interesting that more than 1 agent said it to you. Where they even in separate airports perhaps?

Like I said, you're probably missing something so don't give them a reason to "single you out."
