Question About Luggage

Hello,

I have an upcoming flight from Vancouver to Shanghai, a nine hour layover then a flight to Seoul on China Eastern. When I booked the ticket this was the best deal available however now I have found an earlier flight from Shanghai to my hometown (not Seoul) for only $250. Because I used the outgoing ticket already they won't offer me any refund but because the new ticket is so cheap and much more convenient I want to just book it anyway.

My question is, will the airline allow me to send the luggage to the new destination? All travel will on be China Eastern however one ticket has the original Vancouver - Shanghai - Seoul and the other, new ticket is just Shanghai to Busan. Am I able to say to the airline just to ignore the Seoul ticket and send my luggage to Busan?

Any imput would be greatly appreciated. I have tried contacting CS but they're not open yet and I'd like to get this sorted ASAP.

Thanks.

Question About Luggage

To recap your position, it seems like you have one ticket from YVR-PVG-ICN (<--guessing) and another ticket from PVG to your_hometown. But the trans-pacific leg is the original ticket. Is that right?

Since you will technically be a "no show" on the original ticket's PVG-ICN leg, you may have difficulty getting this done, even if the ticket agent in YVR allows it. US airlines have been known to cancel both legs even when they identify you as a possible no show.

If your layover is still 9hours, why not just check the bag only to PVG, telling the agent that you just want the bag when you get to the other end, and you can recheck it to your new destination at PVG?

Sure, you may still have to get the bag at PVG customs no matter how you check, but with the bag checked only to PVG, they won't be expecting it on the original second leg.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Yes, the trans-Pacific leg is on the original ticket. I will be taking the Vancouver to Shanghai flight so my luggage will make it that far, I just thought they could tag the baggage to Busan using the new ticket.

My layover time in Shanghai if I buy the new ticket would be 4 hours. If my flight is on time this would give me time to collect the luggage and check it in again. That's not a bad idea and if they're unable to put it through to the new destination I might do that.

Are you saying there could be problems even if the ticket desk people in Vancouver say it's ok and tag it in front of me? If it's tagged through to Busan and I'm on both flights with the luggage, shouldn't it be ok?

Thanks again for the response!

Actually, I remember why I didn't want to just recheck my baggage. The baggage allowance on the Shanghai to Busan flight is only 20kg checked baggage and I will probably have more than that. If I put my luggage through from Vancouver then I can use the international baggage rules of 2 pieces of 23kg.

Question About Luggage

You won't be able to do that. They won't allow you to interline when you're not flying all legs like that. You'll have to pay the luggage fee for the other flight.
