Theft from overhead bin

I want to say that I was not aware of the scale of this problem, but apparently in SE Asia and especially on budget airlines is is quite common:

In 2012, 43 cases were reported in all. As of Tuesday, there have already been 36 reported cases this year.

I'd say that it's a problem on all airlines. That's why I always try to keep my bag in front of me, in the overheads, so I could see if someone took it.

There are the famous case of an AF FA who stole huge amounts of valuables over a few years who got caught a year or two ago.

There were 36 reported cases in how many flights??

I'd still say it is quite uncommon.

How was the guy convicted of theft, when he didn't steal anything? "Moving the victim's bag" is considered theft? Clearly the laws of Singapore differ greatly from the USA.

Oh yes, don't go there. In Singapore for example chewing a gum is not considered a fundamental human right...

But in light of the situation - how one would qualify unwarranted access to someone else's property?

The one more weird part of the story is that three FAs witnessed the whole ordeal and one of them recorded it, apparently on her mobile phone. And seems they did not intervene...

If someone steals you car, and takes it around the block, and returns it, isn't it still theft?

I'm sure the FA's wanted to get proof of what the guy was doing. Probably nothing too valuable in the bag.

Not in the UK:

Well, one can always say that he/she never had an intention to take someone's property permanently. Only just for couple of decades.

Yes

And the victims were too embarrassed to report it or where home before they knew. Then too late.

Unless of course (s)he filled the tank afterwards, but that is highly unlikely.

lets compare the scale of overhead bin thefts to car thefts in the county in which i live. 36 ovhd bags in 6 months. 50 car thefts per day in prince george county. 18000 a year, 36 is a joke. protect yourself.

9 months is a pretty harsh sentence also.

While theft from you carry on may not be common it is not unheard of. Here are a few suggestions to protect your valuables while in the air.

Always lock all compartments in carry-ons. Anyone going through security is at high risk or theft by TSA or other pax. Theft from overhead bins is easy if bags aren't locked. Same rules on a train or any bus. It amazes me how dumb so many people are.
